A Decade of Dedication: Celebrating 10 Years of Making A Scene |
Ten years ago, the music world looked very different. Streaming was exploding, major labels were tightening their grip on everything from playlists to payouts, and independent musicians were fighting just to stay heard. It was in this landscape that MakingAScene.org came to life — not as another music blog chasing trends, but as a true resource for indie artists and the fans who believe in them.
Now, after a decade of standing by musicians and building an incredible community, it’s time to celebrate how far we’ve all come — and take a look at what’s still ahead. |

How Universal Music Group and Spotify Rewrote the Rules—At the Expense of Indie Artists |
In a move that sent ripples through the music world, Spotify announced in late 2023 that artists whose tracks fail to reach 1,000 annual streams would no longer receive any royalties. While the platform justified this decision as an effort to combat streaming fraud and better allocate resources to more popular music, a deeper look reveals a troubling pattern one driven in part by pressure from Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s most powerful record label. |

Breaking Free: Why Decentralization is the Future for Indie Musicians |
For decades, independent musicians have walked a tightrope stretched between creative freedom and the cold realities of an industry designed to control access, dictate value, and monopolize profits. Even as digital platforms promised liberation, many artists soon realized they had simply traded one set of gatekeepers for another. Streaming giants, major labels, and algorithm-driven platforms still determine whose voices are heard—and who gets paid (or more often, underpaid). |

The Ripcords were born out of a project envisioned by Rex Lyons, who wanted to explore some of his favorite music alongside his collaborators from The Roustabouts, another well-known roots band in Central New York (CNY) fronted by Dugan Henhawk. Rex and Dugan share a long history, going back to their days in Whiteboy and the Wagonburners, the influential punk-and-roll band that ignited the CNY music scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s. |
