We have a new reality in the music industry today. The new music consumer no longer looks at music as a commodity to purchase, but more as something they have unlimited access to. This has affected the whole industry but nowhere is it more evident then with the Independent Artist!
During the 90’s the independent artist had the opportunity to take over the distribution of their music and have all the revenue come directly to them. CD Sales were still brisk, download sales were starting and was a windfall revenue stream for the indie artist. Today those streams are drying up and now the Indie Artist must depend on touring and performing live as their main income stream.
The problem with this is for the last 20 years that network of venues that the Indie Artist depended on started to dry up as well. The new music consumer and in particular the Millennial market does not see the small to medium venue as a viable entertainment option. They attend the large shows and festivals with the big name artists, but those venues that are the meat and potatoes of the original music touring system are suffering from lack of attendees.
The first step to trying to understand this problem is to understand the market and what they are looking for. This survey is designed to be that first step. If you have a Millennial in your house, have them take the survey and share it with their friends. Of Course you can take it as well! The more information we can get on what it will take to revive this scene the better our chances are that we can give the indie artist the opportunity to make a living doing what they do.
