Set the Darkness Reeling
Irish folk rock duo The Winter Codes present their brand new album
“Set the Darkness Reeling” and with it Barney Murray and David Walshe have created a homage to their native Ireland and a tribute to the one who sadly passed away ten years ago Paul Walshe, who was also a member of the band. With this release, he is immortalized. on the incredible LP, in memory and with his expert musicianship gracing some of the tracks.
The Winter Codes is the project of Barney Murray who originally found success as the lead vocalist for Irish punk band Blood or Whiskey. The two are accompanied by the Irish alt-folk singer Lisa Loughrey (“one of the best voices in the Irish music scene” – Irish Echo and many great minds including Daithi Meila from the Irish/Bluegrass band Jig Jam and engineer Sean Montgomery Dietz.
Some may ask, do we need another Irish folk album? The answer is very clear: Yes! This album definitely!
14 songs that contain a brilliant mixture of traditional Irish music, the typical folk sound and punk elements that add to the whole thing give an absolute kick.
“Troublesome Girl” sung by Lisa Loughrey is one of my favorites, energetic and sweeping, a foot stomper that definitely puts you in a good mood.
“Thirty Years of Tears”, no music, only spoken words but they have it all and really make you listen.
“Too Sly to Die”, the lead single from the album has that typical Irish spirit, stirring and rousing, just incredibly good!
Equally great is the song “Deartháirín Ó Mo Chroi” which means Brother of my heart. A ballad-esque song with a beautiful melody.
This is just a small selection of the songs on a really varied album that makes you want more. More music, more Ireland and more The Winter Codes!
“We got the idea to record an EP of five of our songs, and before we knew it we had an album’s worth of material that became the Set The Darkness Reeling album.”
That’s what the guys said about the album and hopefully they’ll bring us more of their amazing music soon. If it turns out to be more than a planned EP….so much the better for us!
Set the Darkness Reeling is a must listen for fans of Irish folk, rock, and everything in between!
