Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Jamie Williams and The Roots Collective
Jamie Williams & the Roots Collective are a roots-driven live band built for one thing: a great night out. Fronted by singer-songwriter Jamie Williams on vocals and rhythm guitar, the band also features Dave Milligan on lead guitar, Jake “The Dude” Milligan on bass, and James Bacon on drums. Together, they walk what they describe as an imaginary tightrope between Tom Petty and The Rolling Stones—hooky songs, swaggering grooves, and a rootsy bite that lands somewhere between country blues, rock, and Americana.
After years of lineup changes, hundreds of shows, and a lot of hard-earned road experience, the band has settled into a super-tight formation that’s firing on all cylinders. They bring their own distinctive style to festivals, venues, clubs, and pubs across the UK, including a couple of rapturous nights at London’s legendary 100 Club. Their mission is simple and non-negotiable: have fun, and make sure the crowd does too. This is not a band that stands still on stage staring at their shoes. They play like they mean it, and they want the room moving.
That live reputation has earned them impressive company. Over the years, they’ve shared lineups with artists and bands such as Wilko Johnson, The Blockheads, The Darkness, The Pretty Things, Los Pacaminos, The Quireboys, Dr Feelgood, The Yardbirds, Eddi Reader, and The Animals—proof that they can hold their own in a wide range of rock and roots environments.
At the center of it all is Jamie Williams’ songwriting. He writes accessible, memorable songs that connect quickly—strong enough to stand up in a solo acoustic setting, and even more powerful when the full band adds its punch, texture, and energy. The arrangements are tight without being overly polished, leaving just enough rough edge to keep everything alive and unpredictable.
In spirit, Jamie Williams & the Roots Collective feel like the classic touring bands of the 1970s: part traveling circus, part dysfunctional family, and fully committed to entertaining whoever shows up. Their ethos is, “It’s not just a gig, it’s a night out.” They want people smiling, singing, dancing, and walking out feeling like they were part of something.
With growing UK and international airplay, the band is building a worldwide following—loyal fans who will travel serious miles just to catch a show. And once you’ve seen them live, you understand why.
