Editors Note: Darwins Burgers and Blues, because of circumstances beyond their control, has been forced to close their doors at their current location. I had the opportunity to speak to Lindsey Wine one of the owners of this legendary Atlanta Blues Venue about what has transpired and what they plan for the future. So listen to the Interview Here and enjoy the slideshow of images from this venue!
If you want to know more about what Darwins have meant to the Atlanta Blues Society check out the article “The Biggest Little Indie Blues Club In Atlanta” ..
Editors Note: As you can imagine running a Blues Venue is not exactly a cash cow .. The new location (the building that use to house “Steves Live Music” in Sandy Springs) needs a complete build out and all new equipment before they can open for business again! This is because when Steve’s closed the sold off EVERYTHING that was in the building! At this point they are moving into an empty shell, So they could use your help on their go Fund me Page, for new equipment, seating, sound equipment, etc.. So if you have ever played Darwins, or seen a great new band there please consider a few dollars for their GoFundMe Campaign and help them get back to bringing in the best touring and local blues artists to Atlanta.
Here is the Future Location of Darwins!
In January this year, Darwin’s won a Keeping The Blues Alive Award for the work Lindsay Wine, Jonathan Aiken and their staff have put in over the last 5 years to promote the blues. I wrote the nomination, which was later used in the awards program and is now being used for Darwin’s GoFundMe as they try to raise funds to move from the little house in Marietta
In the nomination, I wrote:
“Darwin’s Burgers & Blues is not big and its not glitzy. It’s a little old house bursting with good food and fantastic blues music.”
The new place is not glitzy either, but it is quite a bit bigger. It is the old Steve’s Music location in Sandy Springs.
There are many compelling reasons for moving, not least of which is that the lease is up New Year’s Eve. And yes, there will be a major farewell New Year’s Eve party!
The little house may be stuffed with great vibes and memories. but it was also often stuffed with people too, to the point that many were not able to get inside, and the very limited and shrinking parking kept even more from attending. To top it off, the building was constantly in need of repair and the kitchen, while providing some of the best burgers and other sandwiches I have ever tasted, kept Chef Aiken from expanding the menu even more and courting the lucrative lunch crowd.
My husband and I spent nearly every weekend for the past five years at Darwin’s. We feel sad to leave our musical home. How we will miss that little house that introduced us to so many of our favorite groups, but we look forward to the new Darwin’s where I know Lindsay and Aiken will create the same intimate, friendly atmosphere, with the same great music and delicious food, only for more people!
Please contribute to there GoFundMe so that we can have Darwin’s back as soon as possible!
And keep an eye on Darwin’s Twitter (@DarwinsBurgers). where I am the social media correspondent, and I will try to keep you up to date with moving progress!
