This is the new Cass Clayton Band album “Midnight in a Bottle” being released today. The album is divided into two sides. Side A includes five songs opening with “Rear View Mirror” and we get to hear the smoky-sweet vocalist Cass Clayton for the very first time. Cass sings all lead vocals and even plays slide guitar on two tracks.

Cass was voted “Favorite Female Vocalist 2024” at the Colorado Blues Societies Member Choice Awards. Cass is based in Denver, Colorado and tours regionally. The band’s previous album was ranked #1 on the national R&B Radio Chart as well as being ranked #1 on the Roots Music Report’s Colorado Chart.

“Rear View Mirror” was written by producer Taylor Scott. The title track, “Midnight In A Bottle”, like most   of the songs , was co-written by Cass and Scott. “Don’t Sleep Through The Revolution” is from the two of them with the addition of Eric Luba. The A side is completed with “Make Believing” as Cass sings “love is believing…tell me what you want to believe”.

Side 2 opens with “Slow Fade”, “maybe it’s time for a slow fade”. “Somebody’s On Your Case” was written by Eric Randle. Randle was a songwriter with Willie Mitchell’s Hi Records from 1971 – 1980. His song was recorded by Ann Peebles in 1972. Jon Wirtz plays keyboards, organ and synthesizer on all tracks although James Dunston joins him on synthesizer on the lead track. Backing vocalists include Lyle Divinsky and Taylor Scott.

“Grandma’s Hands” was written by Bill Withers and produced by Booker T. Jones in 1971. I’m not sure why Cass credits Dani Hines as a co-writer, perhaps she contributed the arrangement. 

Cass states “I’m a purist when it comes to lyrics and the importance of the story…our music explores a vast creative terrain, but the lyrics guide each song to it’s essence. Let Cass be your guide.
