Diamonds at the Rainbow’s End (Live in Norway)
Roller Records
V&BT is a Norwegian band that first came together in 2016 with a common goal to create a good live atmosphere on small local stages. This self-produced album is a mixture of mostly original songs that can be perceived as blues, blues-rock or pop. The band describes itself as a refreshing alternative to “young and beautiful” as the songs are liberatingly free of all but the joy of playing with real instrumenta. The band includes vocalist Vigdis Haugen; guitarist-composer-producer Tom Pettersen; bassist Bjorn Loking; and drummer Christer Persson; unless noted otherwise.
The album opens with “Stormy Weather” as Haugen sings “I walked alone in the neon light…stormy weather…we can barely drive, every day stormy weather…open up and let me in…I feel so bad, I don’t know where the rain begins…better times will come one day…I don’t know when the rain begins”. “Here Comes That Man Again”, “he got me walkin’ on the water, rainin’ on the corner…here he comes again …here comes that man again”.
“Confession”…includes Borre Hansen Bratass siting in on drums, as Haugen belts out. “I got my back up against the wall…I got to thinkin’ I’m waiting for your call… confession, I’m lonely inside, confession, I miss you so bad…confession, I ain’t comin’ back”. “Caves of my Mind”, includes bassist and backing vocalist Espen Hauge, and drummer Anders Viken, “I remember you so…in the caves of my mind”.
“Voodoo Doll”, one again with the rhythm section of Hauge and Viken, Vigdis Haugen chants “sticking needles in your voodoo doll…livin’ on the edge…silver birds flying high…sticking needles in a voodoo doll…voodoo, voodoo, voodoo doll”. “Break That Chain” is a ‘call and response’ with some baritone harmony as Haugen chimes “I got to figure out…break that chain when I think of you…I need a brand new start, get out of the way, gotta get out of bed…it’s time to break that chain”.
“Schizophrenic Soul”, “You got me dancing…searching for it all, you got me with your schizophrenic soul…I’m losing my mind, you’ve done me wrong, searching for it all, you got me with your schizophrenic soul”. “Me and Louise”, “at the end of the day, we’re two of a kind…nobody knows how we do it…by the end of the week”.
On the ska-influenced “Diamonds at the Rainbow’s End”, Haugen cries “I must confess…there’s diamonds at the rainbow’s end…reaching and searching for diamond’s at the rainbow’s end”. “Heart of Stone”, “there is a bright sun comin’… get yourself a job, ’cause your baby’s got a heart of stone, you gotta’ move on, cause your baby’s heart is made of stone”. On the closer, the only cover of the traditional “House of the Rising Sun” with Claf Hjellum on bass, Haugen croons “there is a house in New Orleans, they call the rising sun, it’s been the ruin of many poor boys, oh god, I know I’m one”.
This is V&BT’s debut album on Roller Records. It is an auspicious debut and should further their fanbase. Stay tuned as there is more to come, further down the road.
