Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Turn Turn Turn
Turn Turn Turn is a Minnesota-based trio built around one irresistible idea: great songs sound even better when you can sing them in close harmony. Bonded by a shared love of 1960s and 1970s country, folk, and pop, the band began by exploring classic material together—and quickly grew into a fully original Americana project with its own bright, hook-filled identity.
Their name is more than a reference. It’s a mission statement. Turn Turn Turn “turns” back toward the earliest days of American recorded music, “turns” again to the harmony-rich renaissance of the ’60s and ’70s, and then “turns” forward into the present—bringing those influences into a modern sound that feels timeless but never nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake. The result is Americana with a pop instinct: warm, melodic, and built to stick.
The trio features Adam Levy (guitar, vocals), Savannah Smith (guitar, vocals), and Barb Brynstad (bass, vocals)—three long-established mainstays of the Minnesota music scene. Together they craft a sound that’s equal parts road-ready and radio-friendly: “sweetheart” alt-country folk-pop with smart songwriting, infectious grooves, and choruses that feel like they’ve always existed.
While the band was born as a cover project, it didn’t take long for their original songs to take center stage. Their music carries a “Laurel Canyon meets ’70s Nashville with a touch of cosmic soul” vibe—easy on the surface, but carefully constructed underneath. The band’s signature is their three-part harmony, which doesn’t just decorate the songs—it is the songs. Levy, Smith, and Brynstad each have distinct voices, and when they blend, a “fourth voice” appears: richer, brighter, and more powerful than any one part alone.
Turn Turn Turn delivers the kind of Americana that feels good instantly but holds up over time—crafted with care, sung with heart, and driven by the simple magic of voices that were meant to fit together.
