Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Silver Summer

Silver Summer makes music for the neon hours: the space between last call and sunrise, between memory and possibility, between heartbreak and the reckless feeling that something beautiful might still happen before morning. Blending 1970s glam, disco, and punk with a shimmering wash of 1980s synths, the Mankato, Minnesota band creates a sound that feels both nostalgic and futuristic, like a lost dance-floor anthem beamed in from another timeline.

Formed in the summer of 2019, Silver Summer quickly made its presence known with three successful hometown shows in Mankato before the COVID-19 lockdown brought live music to a halt. Like nearly every band in the world, they were forced into an unexpected pause. By summer 2021, Silver Summer had rebooted, returned to the stage, and began building momentum again with a clearer sense of purpose and a growing body of original material.

At the center of the band is frontman Colin Scharf, whose dynamic vocals and cinematic songwriting give Silver Summer its emotional spark. His lyrics often explore people standing at difficult crossroads: relationships beginning or unraveling, addictions being faced, identities being questioned, and lives shifting in the glow of uncertain moments. His musical influences range widely, from The Clash and New Order to Frank Ocean and Caroline Polachek, and that breadth helps shape Silver Summer’s unusual blend of rock tension, dance-floor pulse, synth-pop color, and emotional vulnerability.

Scharf’s writing magnifies the liminal moments that define the band’s world: late-night drives, rooftop sunrises, passing streetlights, love gained, love lost, and the strange clarity that sometimes arrives when the rest of the world is asleep. Since launching the band, Scharf has also received three Minnesota State Arts Board grants and two Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council grants to support the production of Silver Summer’s debut album, DIE OF LOVE.

Keyboardist and vocalist Hanna Cesario brings a rich musical foundation to the band, with roots in classical and jazz. Her blooming synths, harmonic instincts, chord voicings, and arrangements are central to Silver Summer’s sound, opening the door to a dreamlike world where memories, fantasies, and midnight confessions blur together. Her textures give the music its glowing, cinematic, after-dark quality.

Bassist Ed Avila grounds the band’s shimmer with melodic lines that move with both elegance and drive. His musical history stretches back to the late 1980s Los Angeles New Wave scene, where his first band, New Tribe, broke Van Halen’s record for sold-out shows at the Whisky a Go Go. Since then, Avila has remained active in original music while also becoming a published author and tenured English professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato. In Silver Summer, he has found a musical home that connects his history in New Wave and rock with the band’s forward-looking sound.

Drummer Tyler Vaughan gives Silver Summer its physical force. A versatile player behind the kit, Vaughan is equally comfortable with tight backbeats, expansive big beats, and dynamic shifts that allow the band to move from intimate atmosphere to full-throttle release. Also a professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, Vaughan brings both precision and power to the group, helping Silver Summer explore the full depth of its sonic range.

Together, Silver Summer pulls from the swagger of glam rock, the sensual motion of disco, the urgency of punk, the emotional drama of synth-pop, and the literary detail of strong songwriting. The result is a band that balances shine with grit, romance with danger, and atmosphere with groove. Their songs are stylish without being cold, danceable without being empty, and emotional without losing their edge.

Silver Summer released ORACLE, a three-song EP, in April 2025, offering a vivid preview of the band’s evolving sound. Their debut full-length album, DIE OF LOVE, is forthcoming in June 2026. Like neon shimmering in moonlight, lipstick on the rim of a highball glass, or taillights burning through lake fog, Silver Summer captures the mood of nights that feel too vivid to forget. This is midnight music for summer lovers, restless hearts, and anyone who still believes the right song can turn a fleeting moment into a lasting memory.
