Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Matt Schofield
British-born and now based in the United States, Matt Schofield has spent his career redefining and expanding the boundaries of British Blues. A multi-award-winning guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, and bandleader, Schofield has been performing for more than 30 years, with over 20 years dedicated to his solo career. Widely recognized as one of the most distinctive and influential guitarists of his generation, his impact on the global blues scene is undeniable.
His career has taken him and his band across nearly 30 countries, earning both critical and industry acclaim along the way. Among his many honors are three “British Blues Guitarist of the Year” awards, “British Blues Album of the Year,” and the distinction of being the first guitarist inducted into the “British Blues Awards Hall of Fame.” Mojo Magazine named one of his releases “Blues Album of the Year,” while Guitar & Bass Magazine listed him among the “Top Ten British Blues Guitarists of All Time,” alongside legends like Eric Clapton and Peter Green.
Known for his fluid, melodic playing style and signature tone, Schofield has influenced a generation of guitarists. His reputation has even led to a line of sought-after signature instruments and equipment, including the Two-Rock Matt Schofield amplifier.
Still, it’s on stage where Schofield truly shines. Whether headlining major festivals such as Montreal Jazz Festival and North Sea Jazz, or electrifying intimate venues like New York’s Iridium or London’s 100 Club, his performances leave a lasting impression. With a combination of technical mastery, soulful vocals, and fearless improvisation, Schofield creates a live experience that is both authentic and unforgettable.
In addition to performing, Schofield is also a respected educator. In 2018, he released Blues Speak, his highly acclaimed instructional series with TrueFire. He has since shared his knowledge with musicians around the world, teaching masterclasses and clinics from Tokyo to Texas.
Looking ahead, Schofield is preparing a new release that reunites him with his original organ trio—the lineup that first launched his solo career 20 years ago. This highly anticipated project promises to honor his roots while continuing his legacy of pushing the blues into new territory.
