Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Leeann Atherton
Leeann Atherton is a country, gospel, and blues singer-songwriter based in Austin, Texas, with a voice shaped by the South, the road, and a lifetime of hard-earned musical instinct. Her sound carries the grit of the blues, the warmth of gospel, and the storytelling heart of country music, delivered with the kind of honesty that cannot be faked.
Atherton first found her footing in Charleston dance bands, where she learned how to connect with a room, hold a crowd, and sing with both power and feel. Her voice helped pay her way through college, and before long she was making the rounds through Nashville honky-tonks, sharpening her craft in one of country music’s most demanding proving grounds.
Eventually, Austin pulled her in for good. At Antone’s Blues Club, one of the city’s most storied music rooms, Atherton found the sound that would define her: raw, honest, deeply Southern, and rooted in the emotional truth of blues, gospel, and country. It was the right place for an artist whose music lives where joy, sorrow, resilience, and release all meet.
Now eleven albums deep, Atherton has built a body of work that reflects both her range and her staying power. Her recording history includes sessions at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio with producer Rich Brotherton, placing her music inside one of Texas music’s most respected creative spaces. Her album Lady Liberty topped independent Americana charts, helping establish her as an artist with a strong voice in roots music.
Her album Fallen Angel shows the breadth of her songwriting and performance style, moving from the joyful lift of “Smack Dab in a Miracle” to the defiant spirit of “Cleaning House.” Across her catalog, Atherton brings a fearless emotional presence to the microphone, whether she is singing about redemption, survival, love, trouble, faith, or freedom.
In 2026, Atherton released the gospel album Good God, which debuted at #26 on the Roots Music Report Top 50 Roots Rock Album Chart. The album marks another powerful chapter in a career that has never been limited to one lane. For Atherton, gospel is not a departure from blues or country; it is part of the same deep well of Southern music, where testimony and rhythm walk hand in hand.
Leeann Atherton continues to perform live country and gospel shows regularly in Austin, Texas, as well as across Southern California, including San Diego, Encinitas, and Carlsbad. Whether on a Texas stage, in a California listening room, or behind the microphone in the studio, she brings a voice that is soulful, seasoned, and unmistakably her own.
With eleven albums, a deep connection to Austin’s roots music community, and a sound that blends country grit, gospel fire, and blues truth, Leeann Atherton stands as an artist who sings from lived experience. Her music is raw, honest, Southern to the bone, and built for anyone who still believes a great song can testify, heal, and raise a little holy trouble along the way.
