Making a Scene Brings you an interview with “King Me Blues”
On their debut album, Your Move, King Me Blues dives headfirst into a vintage aesthetic on multiple fronts to create eight songs that blend a range of blues and blues-rock styles with a definitively modern accent; all executed with just enough precision to keep it solid, and just enough looseness to keep it fun. Longtime collaborators drummer/engineer Jamey Staub and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Anthony Roina began writing and recording what would evolve into King Me Blues at the height of the pandemic.
“I started writing a lot of songs during covid,” Staub comments, “and I needed a guitarist to really bring them to life, so I reached out to Anthony. By sheer coincidence, Anthony was buying a lot of vintage gear from the ‘50s and ‘60s at that time and when we started bouncing ideas off each other it became clear pretty quickly that we should do a blues album only using that vintage gear. We started writing together with a sonic concept in mind, touching on everything from ‘50s jump to late ‘60s jam stuff.” “We never were in the same room together for any of the recording,” Roina notes. “I always like to do my tracks from the comfort of the studio I have in my home. I want to color it the way I want; that’s where the magic is. I would come up with an idea and send it to Jamey, he would send me back drum tracks. Other times he would send over a chord progression he’d written on piano or just a drum beat, and then we’d go back and forth and build it up until the icing was on the cake.
” Your Move plays out like a late night flip through blues and blues-rock radio 50+ years ago, as King Me Blues keeps it all relentlessly engaging and thoroughly satisfying with a level of inventiveness and finesse bands together for decades strive to achieve.
