Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Joshua Espinoza
Latino-American jazz pianist Joshua Espinoza is known for blending and bending genres into music that feels both familiar and refreshingly undefinable. With bassist Kris Monson and drummer Jaron Lamar Davis, the Joshua Espinoza Trio explores the space where jazz improvisation meets classical chamber music, pop sensibilities, and folk traditions.
Their work has earned wide recognition, including features on Spotify’s State of Jazz playlist and a Top 40 spot on Spotify’s Global Jazz Charts for their contemplative cover of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes.”
The trio tours frequently, performing at renowned venues and festivals such as Blues Alley, Keystone Korner, The Jazz Kitchen, The Bop Stop, and the DC Jazz Festival. Their albums Journey Into Night and Songs from Yesterday have been praised by critics and are available on all major platforms.
Based in Baltimore, Espinoza is also a dedicated educator, serving on the faculty of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
