Dyer Davis is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his electrifying performances deeply rooted in Southern blues-rock. Davis has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting new artists as he was a 2023 Blues Blast nominee as Best New Artist Debut Release for his album “Dog Bites Back”, “an exceptional album…a really great piece of work”.
On this follow-up album, “Kiss The Ring”, vocalist/guitarist Dyer Davis; is accompanied by Warren Beck, keyboards and vocals; Will Weiner, bass and vocals; and David Weatherspoon, drums and percussion.
The album opens with “I Ain’t Lyin'” as Davis sings “I ain’t got a cent to my name…give me back the simple life”. On “Pass It Over” he growls “like a dog in heat…I’m gonna show you my gun…you could see it in my eyes… gonna give me all you got until there ain’t none left, pass it over to me”.
The title track “Kiss The Ring”, “you’ll never put me out again…kiss the ring…have a little faith, another day of play, kiss the ring”. On “Around The Bend”, “I said hi…as I look in your eyes…I’m comin’ round the bend, whatevers comin’ next day, we should all know as we’re comin’ around the bend”.
My favorite is “Damned”, “bring me up, bring me down…I’m thankful for the thunder and rain…I know what I should do it for you but I probably won’t, I’m damned if I do, I’m damned if I don’t, nobody wins we’re all goin’ down”. “Brackish Water”, “there is no tellin’ where I’m going but keep it swinging, maybe someday I’ll be free…I’m in brackish waters”.
“Have Mercy”, “I’m down in the riverside, singing songs so sweet, I don’t ever want to feel I’m out of touch, ain’t nothing so beautiful you can’t see, have mercy on me, won’t you please”, with some great pedal steel. “Laying On The Floor”, “all the time, laying down on the floor…looking back…all my time laying on the floor”.
“Baby”, “your the sweetest…love of my life…you got me tied up I forget what I wanted to say…baby, give me all your time…look into my eyes, and let me be mesmerized…baby, looking for a kiss, your always on my mind”. On the closer “Enough Is Enough”, Davis croons, “I can’t tell you what your doing or how you did me wrong, I’ve taken all I can take, enough is enough”.
Downbeat Magazine’s John Frank-Hadley said “Dyer Davis brings new immediacy to blues and blues-rock by singing as if he were probing a deep recess within him. His album jumps him to the front row of the most promising young up-and-comers”. Davis continues his mission on “Kiss The Ring”.
