Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Billy Price
Billy Price is a Blues Music Award-winning soul-blues vocalist whose powerful voice, deep musical roots, and decades-long career have made him one of the most respected singers in contemporary blues and soul music. Known for his commanding stage presence and emotionally rich vocal delivery, Price has built a career defined by authenticity, consistency, and a lifelong commitment to the music.
Price first attracted national attention through his three-year association with legendary guitarist Roy Buchanan. He served as the vocalist on two Buchanan albums, That’s What I’m Here For and Live Stock, bringing his soulful voice to recordings that helped introduce him to a wider audience. That early period placed Price in the company of one of the most distinctive guitarists of his generation and helped establish him as a vocalist with both power and depth.
Since then, Billy Price has continued to build an impressive body of work through the Keystone Rhythm Band, the Billy Price Band, and his solo projects. Across his career, he has recorded and released a total of 20 albums, CDs, and DVDs, creating a catalog that reflects his deep connection to blues, soul, R&B, and American roots music.
One of Price’s major career milestones came with This Time for Real, his acclaimed collaboration with the late Chicago soul singer Otis Clay. The album received the 2016 Blues Music Award for Best Soul Blues Album, further confirming Price’s standing as one of the leading voices in soul-blues. The project paired two powerful vocalists with a shared respect for classic soul tradition and remains an important highlight in Price’s recording career.
Price has remained a frequent Blues Music Award nominee in the years since. His album Reckoning received a 2019 nomination for Best Soul Blues Album, followed by a 2020 nomination in the same category for Dog Eat Dog. He has also been nominated multiple times for Best Male Soul Blues Artist, including nominations in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024. In 2024, he also received a Blues Music Award nomination for Instrumentalist – Vocals.
Based in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Billy Price Band continues to bring Price’s soul-blues sound to audiences with energy, precision, and feeling. The band features Dave Dodd on drums, Tom Valentine on bass, Lenny Smith on guitar, Jim Britton on keyboards, Eric Spaulding on saxophone, and Joe Herndon on trumpet. Together, they give Price’s music the full-bodied sound it deserves, blending tight musicianship with the groove and emotional force that define great soul and blues.
The Billy Price Band has also earned strong recognition at home, winning the Pittsburgh City Paper Readers’ Poll as the top blues band in the city in both 2021 and 2022. That local recognition reflects the band’s deep connection to Pittsburgh’s music community as well as its reputation as a powerful live act.
With a career that spans collaborations with Roy Buchanan, award-winning recordings with Otis Clay, 20 releases, and decades of live performance, Billy Price remains a vital voice in American soul-blues. His music carries the grit of the blues, the warmth of soul, and the authority of an artist who has spent a lifetime doing the work. Whether on record or on stage with the Billy Price Band, Price continues to sing with conviction, heart, and unmistakable soul.
