The Antonio Adolfo album titled, “Balaios” (pronounced bah-lie-ohs) is the Portuguese word for woven baskets.  In Northeast Brazil, it is common to see a balaios balanced gracefully on people’s heads, as they walk by transporting their goods in those baskets.

In many ways, this album of music is like a balaios.  Each musician gathers what she or he has cultivated over time, placing each piece of melody, memory, lyric or solo inside this CD jacket. Here is a group of precious compositions recorded and transmitted for all the world to hear.

Antonio has written nine original compositions to fill his baskets with joy, energy, colorful music and creativity. He opens with “3D Blues” written back in 1965 and bursting into my listening room with excitement.  The tenor saxophone of Marcelo Martins offers a dynamic solo, followed by Jesse Sadoc on trumpet, answering the saxophone with his own energetic and creative improvised solo. Adolfo enters the picture, playing a bluesy solo on piano.

Next comes a lilting bolero called “Claudia.”  It features one of Adolfo’s special guests on guitar, Thom Rotella. This is a tune Antonio co-wrote with Tibério Gaspar back in 1969.

Antonio Adolfo seems to draw music from a bottomless well of creativity. He has been composing and recording his wonderful compositions for the past six decades. The pianist is a recipient of ten Latin Grammy nominations.  His song catalogue boasts more than 200 original compositions.  Most were written by Adolfo, but he also collaborates with co-writers. On this album, four of the songs were co-written with his longtime creative partner, lyricist and guitarist, Tibério Gaspar.  Sadly, Gaspar passed away in 2017, but his music lives on.

I fell in love with the composition called “Sambalaio” that fuses samba and funky percussion into the arrangement. They create an irresistible groove.  This tune makes me want to get up and dance across my listening room. Here is a song that was originally written back in 1989. It’s bolstered by the ensemble horn lines that punch the rhythm to higher heights.

Perhaps Adolfo’s publicist said it best when she explained in his press package that “his distinctive melodies have inspired countless vocalists and musicians worldwide. Although Adolfo draws from different periods of his musical journey, these compositions are reborn here as fresh interpretations. They reflect the enduring creativity of an artist who never stops exploring, evolving and making new music.”
