Alexis Martin ENSEMBLE LES POLES VOLUME 1
ALEXIS MARTIN ENSEMBLE
LES POLES VOLUME 1
Les Productions Alexis Martin Inc.
Alexis Martin, drums/percussion/keyboards/Moog synths/programming/claviers; Mathieu Désy, double bass; Emie R. Roussel, piano/keyboards/Fender Rhodes; Sheila Hannigan, cello; Jean-François “Fafoui” Gagnon, trumpet/flugelhorn/valve trombone; Marie-Josée Frigon, tenor & baritone saxophone/bass clarinet; André Leroux, soprano & tenor saxophone/flute; Sheila Hannigan, violin.
Alexis Martin has long been recognized for his work in film and television, scoring beautiful instrumental music for both. This album reflects that background, along with the idea of transformation, like the Earth’s magnetic poles. Thus, the title, “Les Poles Volume 1.”
Contracting a host of Quebec’s most sensitive and inventive musicians, the Alexis Martin Ensemble is rich with talent that presents seven luxurious soundscapes, both soothing and melodic. Much of this music reminds me of my massage table and the music the masseuse plays. It is quite relaxing.
Located somewhere in the middle of contemporary jazz and film scores, this album is a collection of pieces that Alexis Martin says reflect his memories of times and places, of childhood and his adult search for comfort and solace. He celebrates the many moments of transition in our human journey to live and learn. He hopes his compositions and arrangements will take the listener on an inner journey to find peace, freedom and solo reflection.
Aside from the beauty captured by these sensitive musicians, I was disappointed in the font used inside the accompanying booklet. The teeny, tiny scribe that lists the instrumentation is extremely disappointing! Have your magnifying glass close by.
I appeal to the artists who should be approving this work. Why do these album cover designers make the mistake of not supporting the musicians by making their names and instrumental credits bold, supportive and readable? Artists should complain!
