Scott Sadlon, drums/composer; Rachel Eckroth, keyboards; Tim Lefebvre, bass.
Scott Sadlon’s fusion jazz trio begins with a tune called “Post Tension” that sets the mood for what is to follow. Sadlon plumps the production up with drums that support the ethereal keyboard contributions of Rachel Eckroth. The tune is called “Post Tension.” Bassist Tim Lefebvre is dynamic on his electric instrument, setting the tempo with melodic lines at the intro, then powerfully supporting all the keyboard excitement that follows. Lefebvre played on David Bowie’s “Blackstar” album. He is known to play many genres of music quite competently and was called a “musical linguist” by Bass Musician Magazine.
Bandleader and drummer, Scott Sadlon grows from a background of indie rock and jazz. His music is openly grounded in risk-taking and exploratory arrangements. He does not simply mark time but instead creates momentum. He encourages his players to listen, react and create in real time. In fact, that’s how this entire album was created.
This is experimental jazz, created through immediate interaction without revision, over-dubbing or re-takes. This trio commits to first impulses, immediate momentum, and letting their music develop organically. Prepare for electronic jazz, dancing on the edge of fusion, featuring three talented musicians who have composed this music “on-the-spot” and freely. Thus, the album title is totally appropriate, “Songs From Thin Air.”
Track 2 is titled “Wandering Timelines.” Sadlon’s drums stroke the tempo into place, with Eckroth improvising and painting a keyboard picture of the universe floating just above our heads and tempting us to become space cadets. Lefebvre lays down a repetitive bass groove with a melody that snatches my year like a schoolteacher’s thumb and fore-finger snapping at me. This tune is whimsical and funky at the same time. It’s ten minutes long, and I never once got bored. It’s constantly evolving, changing, creating, and improvising the moments away.
Sadlon moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2005. He founded a genre-bending musical collective called “Sonrisa” (Spanish for smile) in 2014. He is heralded for his exploration into the trap drums and what they can do, as well as his versatility and ability to play a wide range of genres.
This trio album challenges him in creative ways. it is perhaps one of his finest endeavors to date. Bonding with the talented singer/songwriter/keyboardist Rachel Eckroth, who earned her BA in Jazz Performance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and studied in New York City with Stanley Cowell, she becomes an outstanding piece of this unique trio. About the time Sadlon moved to Phoenix, Eckroth was graduating with an MFA in Jazz Piano. She has released several albums under her own name and identifies first as a music composer. That makes her the perfect fit to compose ‘on-the-spot’ music with Lefebvre and Sadlon.
Oh! By the way, Scott Sadlon also has a lucrative day-job as a dentist serving his Phoenix community with the same learned, technical mastery and care that he puts into the delivery of this artistic album.
