Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Alexis P Suter
Alexis P. Suter is a three-time Blues Music Award nominee—recognized in major categories including the Koko Taylor Award and Best Soul Blues Female Artist—and one of the most commanding voices in modern blues and soul. Raised in Brooklyn in a musically gifted family, Alexis grew up with the belief that music is not just entertainment—it’s an emotional and spiritual experience. That idea still sits at the center of everything she does on stage.
Her voice is unmistakable: big, booming, and deeply human, able to move from tender vulnerability to full-force power in a single phrase. It’s the kind of voice that doesn’t just fill a room—it changes the temperature in it. Alexis brings that same intensity, love, and high-voltage energy into every performance, creating shows that feel less like concerts and more like shared moments of release and connection.
Backed by a powerful six-piece lineup, The Alexis P. Suter Band blends blues, soul, and rock into a sound that’s roots-based but never boxed in. The band first gained major attention through regular performances at Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Rambles in Woodstock, New York, where their chemistry and raw emotional impact quickly became a standout.
At the heart of the group is Alexis and her longtime core band—fellow Brooklyn natives Ray Grappone (drums), Jimmy Bennett (guitar), Daniel Weiss (keyboards), Peter Bennett (bass), and Vicki Bell (producer, vocals, percussion). They’ve been making music together for nearly three decades. Grappone and Bell also run Hipbone Records, and their connection with Alexis goes back to the 1990s, soon after she signed with Epic/Sony Records Japan. At the time, Alexis was performing house music, funk, and R&B. Recognizing the rare power and individuality in her voice, Grappone and Bell invited her to record vocals on a Hipbone project. That session sparked a long-term creative partnership that eventually grew into the Alexis P. Suter Band and the sound they’re known for today.
The band has released six albums to date, and their live shows are what truly define them. One moment the room is dancing to rollicking roots grooves or funky blues, and the next it’s completely still—moved by an awe-filled, soul-shaking performance of a song like “Let It Be” or an original that reaches straight into the gut. Alexis and her band have built a loyal following because they don’t deliver a “set”—they deliver a full emotional arc. Fans come back again and again because they know they’ll feel something real.
Their touring history spans both the East and West Coasts of the United States and reaches audiences internationally, including performances in Europe in countries such as France and the Netherlands. Along the way, critics have often struggled to find language big enough for what Alexis does vocally. Elmore Magazine captured it vividly, describing her as “as fascinating to watch as to hear,” praising the way her contralto can “whisper and purr” before swelling into a wave of sound that feels like it comes from somewhere deeper than technique alone.
Never content to repeat themselves, Alexis and the band continue to expand their catalog by exploring new songs and new textures across multiple genres. They’ve built a reputation for selling out venues, earning rave reviews, and delivering performances that feel both timeless and urgent.
Now, the Alexis P. Suter Band is entering a fresh and exciting chapter. With producer Byron Isaacs (The Lumineers, Levon Helm Band), the band has completed new work that is already generating strong praise from critics and radio. They’ve also recently signed with Nola Blue Records, marking a major step forward in bringing their music to an even wider audience. Label president Sallie A. Bengtson praised the breadth of Alexis’s artistry, noting that her Blues Music Award nominations across multiple blues categories reflect the range and depth listeners can expect in this new era.
With a world-class voice, a road-tested band, and a growing international following, Alexis P. Suter continues to prove that blues and soul are not museum pieces—they are living, breathing, and meant to be felt.
