Making a Scene Presents an Interview with The Gravel Project
When music is in your soul, nothing can hold it back. That unstoppable drive fuels The Gravel Project, a band built on passion, authenticity, and the joy of sharing music with anyone willing to listen.
Led by founding member, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Andrew Gravel, the band features an all-star lineup: keyboardist Jordan Gravel, drummer Dave Fox, percussionist Eguie Castrillo, bassist Brad Barrett, and vocalist Jen Kearney. Together, they create a powerhouse sound rooted in rock, blues, and psychedelia. Each member brings not only professional chops but also a lifetime of dedication to music—several are accomplished educators as well as performers. On stage, that depth translates into performances that are as heartfelt as they are electrifying.
For Andrew and Jordan, music has always been a bond. They started playing together at a young age, and by the time Andrew was in high school, Jordan had already joined his band. Even when Jordan left for South Carolina to study jazz at the College of Charleston, their connection never broke.
In 2010, Andrew began performing under the name The Gravel Project, writing songs and building a reputation around Boston with a rotating cast of musicians. While every show had its own energy, he longed for a steady lineup that could bring the music to its full potential. A turning point came in 2016 when Jordan moved back to Boston, officially joining the band alongside drummer Dave Fox. With this trio at its core, The Gravel Project truly found its identity.
Their first full-band album, Wishful Thinking (2017), marked the beginning of a new era. It was followed by Many Miles Ahead (2022) and Live at Wellspring Studios (2023). Now, with their latest release, Find What You Need, The Gravel Project has created their most personal and authentic work to date.
“This album is about relationships—how they shape us, test us, and ultimately teach us about ourselves,” says Andrew. The record weaves themes of love, growth, trust, regret, and reconciliation into a deeply moving collection of songs.
While Andrew is the band’s primary songwriter, this project also brought collaboration. He co-wrote tracks with his wife Leslie, friend Caleb Warren, and bandmate Jen Kearney, making the record as personal as it is communal. “Almost every song came out of a transformative 18-month stretch of my life,” Andrew explains. “It captures a very specific time and perspective.”
Unlike their previous work, Find What You Need was recorded outside the band at Power Station New England—a sister studio to the iconic NYC Power Station. Working with Grammy-winning producers John Paterno (Gov’t Mule, Bonnie Raitt, Robben Ford) and Greg Ogan (Rihanna, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson), the band embraced fresh ideas and bold techniques that pushed them creatively.
To preserve the raw energy of their live performances, they recorded almost entirely live, with minimal overdubs. “All the singing, guitar, and keys solos were done in the room together,” Andrew says. “We wanted it to feel alive, not polished to perfection.”
As powerful as their recordings are, The Gravel Project is a band that lives for the stage. Their shows channel the fiery spirit of The Allman Brothers Band, the rhythmic pulse of Santana, and the soulful drive of Tedeschi Trucks Band. With vintage instruments in hand and a fearless approach to improvisation, they deliver performances that are timeless, thrilling, and deeply moving.
At its core, The Gravel Project is more than a band—it’s a brotherhood, a family of musicians who give everything they have to their craft. Their music is both technically masterful and emotionally raw, a rare combination that resonates with audiences on every level.
If you haven’t discovered The Gravel Project yet, now is the time to find what you need.
