The Charlie Rouse Band CINNAMON FLOWER THE EXPANDED EDITION
THE CHARLIE ROUSE BAND
CINNAMON FLOWER THE EXPANDED EDITION
Resonance Records
I am swept into the music of The Charlie Rouse Band on Track #2, “Disenchantment (Desencontro).” The tender guitar strings sing solo to attract my full attention, followed by Roger Powell’s string synthesizer. The beauty of this music fills my space with peace. When Charlie Rouse enters on his tenor saxophone, he brings a soulfulness to the project that is undeniable.
This 1977 recording date features Rouse, who was quite famous for being the tenor player in Thelonious Monk’s combo for eleven years. However, Rouse always added his own elegance and soul to whatever stage he stood upon. This is true and confirmed on his Brazilian music project. Rouse was no newcomer to the South American music of Brazil. In 1962, he explored the Latin American country’s sound on his Blue Note album titled, “Bossa Nova Bacchanal.”
This album package includes a detailed liner note booklet created by James Gavin, a highly praised author who wrote biographies on Chet Baker, Peggy Lee and Lena Horne. You will also read a lovely remembrance written by Charlie Rouse’s son, Charlie “Chico” Rouse, Jr., who currently oversees his dad’s estate.
The new edition of this recording is memorable and historic because Resonance Records is releasing two versions: the original unaltered recording, as well as the modified version by Alan Douglas. This album includes the track “Meeting House” written and performed by heavy-weight, Brazilian, pianist Dom Salvador. This track was not released on the Douglas version of “Cinnamon Flower.”
As the heart and soul of both versions of this amazing music is the magnificent talent of Charlie Rouse. His sound and style has become even more appreciated over the years. Here is an example of a true icon who left behind a legacy of excellence.
The Limited-edition 2 LP set, a deluxe CD and digital download will become available on September 19, 2025.
