Under A Mistletoe Sky
Gas Station Music
Born in Minneapolis, Tom Mason now makes his home in Nashville where he has been a sought after guitarist since 1993. He divides his time between playing solo shows; playing pirate festivals with his band Tom Mason and The Blue Buccaneers, and touring with several Americana acts. Mason is also an actor and has appeared in films and plays including “Ricard III” with the Nashville Shakespeare Festival, and touring with the Broadway show: Ring of Fire “The Music of Johnny Cash”. This is Mason’s tenth album overall as he has four solo albums and five albums with the Blue Buccaneers. This is also Mason’s third holiday album, his previous one being 2003’s “A Slide Guitar Christmas” and 2013’s “A Pirate’s Christmas”.
Mason was touring with his band of pirates and scrapped his six-week United Kingdom tour when the Corona virus hit in March of 2020. Stranded on a farm in Grinnell Iowa began working on this album, before driving home to Nashville to complete the production. Mason, guitar, Dobro, trombone, bass, harmonica and percussion and lead vocals; is joined by the Blue Buccaneer rhythm section of Jeff Thorneycroft, bass; and Pete Pulkrabek, drums and percussion. He is also accompanied by producer/keyboardist Michael Webb; drummer Josh McEwen, and vocalists Fawn Larsen and Sheila Lawrence. The album was recorded by Webb at the 805 Studio; and by Mason at Severe Sound.
“Under The Mistletoe Sky” includes ten original yuletide roots rock tunes; two written with his long-time songwriting partner Nate Dungen who fronts his own band “Trailer Trash” and hosts his own series of “Trashy Little Christmas” shows. Their song “Crazy For Christmas” opens the recording with trombone and a resonator guitar to evoke a New Orleans styled Christmas.
The Rolling Stones influenced title track featuring vocalist Lawrence is followed by the soulful rhumba “Christmas Boogaloo” and by the rockabilly styled “Little Elvis, King of the Elves”. Other highlights include the jazzy “Santa Says Keep It Cool”, and the blues shuffle “Christmas in Love”.
This is a totally original take on Christmas that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Check out this pirate as soon as possible.
