There is nothing more exposed than an artist playing solo.  Anyone who is brave enough to do so sheds all pretense and camouflage.  Tobin Mueller is not only brave, but he is also talented and prepared to mesmerize us with his singular gift on the 88-keys.  Mueller has been playing piano for decades and both his technique and creativity are mirrored in the twelve original songs he has composed and recorded on Vol. Two of his “At the Piano” album, released Feb 20, 2024.  Mueller opens with “Prelude to Emancipation,” sitting at the grand piano and demanding the listener’s attention.  This is followed by a brilliantly played rendition of his song “Gumshoe Ragtime” that boldly shows Mueller’s mastery of the piano instrument and employs his creativity in bright and boisterous ways.  “Gift of Wings” takes us on a flight that a bird or bumblebee might have epitomized, it’s freedom captured within the chord changes of this song Mueller has written.  Tobin’s fingers entice you into his tunes.  He saturates this listener’s ears with melodies, moods, and various tempo changes that keep this reviewer interested and attentive.

A song called “Sea Storm” captures the restless waves and unpredictable strength and beauty of the ocean.  You might say that Mueller’s piano playing is a combination of classical training, modern contemporary music, and his ability to reach deeply inside himself to capture the beautiful creativity that lives there.  Mueller embraces his gift with busy fingertips.
