Making a Scene Presents an Interview with The Lucky Losers
The Lucky Losers are an award-winning six-piece blues and soul band from San Francisco. Since 2019, they have won six Independent Blues Awards, including Artist of the Year for vocalist Cathy Lemons and Song of the Year for “Godless Land.” The band is fronted by Lemons, a powerful singer raised in Dallas, and Phil Berkowitz, a New Jersey–born harmonica player and vocalist known for his distinctive style. Together, they lead a band that blends blues, soul, rock, gospel, and Americana into a bold, full-band sound built mostly on original material.
Cathy Lemons has been called “the finest female blues vocalist in the U.S.” by Real Blues, while Living Blues praised Phil Berkowitz as “one of the West Coast’s most distinctive harp players.” On stage, their contrasting voices and styles create a rare kind of chemistry. They bring back the classic blues duet format while pushing it forward with modern songwriting, deep emotion, and strong musical interaction. Backed by a tight, expressive ensemble, their songs feel both timeless and urgent.
Their latest album, Arrival, released on MoMojo Records, is currently number seven on the Living Blues Radio Chart. Since forming in 2015, The Lucky Losers have toured across 46 U.S. states, released six studio albums, and built a strong international following. They have received six national awards, 25 nominations, and two finalist honors from the International Songwriting Competition.
Their catalog includes A Winning Hand (2015), In Any Town (2016), Blind Spot (2018), Godless Land (2020), Standin’ Pat (2022), and Arrival (2025). These releases have charted internationally and earned praise from outlets like DownBeat, Living Blues, Elmore, Blues Music Magazine, Paris-Move, and Blues News Germany.
With their honest songwriting, powerful performances, and undeniable chemistry, The Lucky Losers continue to stand out as one of the most exciting and respected blues bands working today.
