Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Murali Coryell
Murali Coryell’s story is one of deep roots, hard-earned growth, and a lifelong connection to music that runs far deeper than a famous last name. His journey started before he could walk. He was held as a baby by Jimi Hendrix, lived with Carlos Santana, and grew up around dinner tables shared with Miles Davis. Music wasn’t something he chose later in life. It was the air he breathed from the very beginning.
Today, Murali Coryell stands as a fully realized artist, blending blues, soul, rock, and heartfelt songwriting into a sound that feels classic and current at the same time. His latest recording, “Soul Of A Nation,” has been years in the making and captures a powerful snapshot of his artistic evolution. The album features songs recorded with both his New York and Texas bands, creating a rich mix of energy and perspective. With six original songs and two carefully chosen covers, the album highlights Murali’s soulful vocals, expressive guitar work, and the kind of human performance no machine could ever replace.
Murali’s career has taken him from intimate clubs to some of the most respected stages in the world. He has toured as a supporting act for B.B. King and shared the stage with legends like Buddy Guy, Delbert McClinton, and Levon Helm. He has toured as a featured artist with blues icon Joe Louis Walker, jazz saxophonist Bill Evans, and his father, jazz fusion pioneer Larry Coryell. He is also a longtime performer at the Mustique Blues Festival, often called “Mick Jagger Island,” a destination known for world-class music in a relaxed, soulful setting.
His recordings have earned strong praise as well. Reviewing “Made In Texas,” Jim Hynes of Elmore Magazine wrote that Murali continues to expand his sound while keeping his deep soul fully intact. European outlet Rootstime.be echoed that sentiment, calling the album everything a music lover could want, from strong songs to great variety and an excellent band. Inspired by the war in Ukraine and the strength of its people, Murali wrote, performed, and produced the song “Ukraine War Cries,” which received an immediate public “like” from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Twitter.
Murali Coryell’s work has been recognized by major outlets including Billboard, CNN, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. He is the son of Larry Coryell and author and actress Julie Coryell, and the grandson of stage, film, and television actress Carol Bruce. Despite that lineage, Murali has built his reputation through relentless touring, emotional honesty, and live performances that leave audiences feeling like they’ve witnessed something real.
He is also a true global artist. Murali speaks French, Spanish, and Russian, allowing him to connect directly with audiences around the world. His music has taken him across Europe, Russia, Lebanon, Panama, South Africa, Australia, and the Caribbean. Along the way, he has honored his influences by performing songs from artists like Sam Cooke, Al Green, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Charles Mingus, and Marvin Gaye, always bringing his own voice and soul to the material.
His discography includes key milestone recordings like the 1999 album “2120,” co-produced by Marshall Chess as a tribute to classic Chicago blues, and the 2009 release “Sugar Lips,” produced by Grammy winner Tom Hambridge. Murali’s voice and guitar have also appeared on NBC’s television series “Crossing Jordan.” He was inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame and has been nominated for a Blues Music Award for DVD of the Year.
Most recently, Murali had the honor of performing for former President Joe Biden during a lifetime achievement award ceremony at the Kennedy Center in Boston. It was another moment in a career built on respect, consistency, and a deep belief in the power of music to tell the truth.
Murali Coryell continues to push the blues forward, refusing to stay stuck in one place. His music is rooted in tradition but always reaching ahead, driven by soul, experience, and a voice that still has plenty to say.
