Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Bill Poss and Loveseat
Bill Poss is a traveling troubadour turned community torchbearer — a songwriter, performer, festival founder, and musical storyteller from Effingham, Illinois. Over the past two decades, Bill has carved out a unique path in American roots music, touring extensively across North America as a solo artist, as well as with The Ginn Sisters and alt-country icon Fred Eaglesmith.
Since returning to his hometown of Effingham in 2013, Bill has become a creative cornerstone of the local music scene. He founded the beloved Moccasin Creek Festival and launched Poss Music Works NFP, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering live music and arts education. Always spinning new wheels, he continues to perform solo and with a range of projects that reflect his deep musical curiosity and community spirit.
One of his most personal and heartfelt collaborations is Loveseat, a stripped-down acoustic duo with his wife, singer-songwriter JJ. With just two voices and one guitar, Loveseat brings an intimacy to their performances that’s equal parts romantic, quirky, and soul-stirring. Whether playing original tunes or tender reimaginings of classic songs, Bill and JJ share the stage like they share a couch — with warmth, laughter, and love.
In addition to Loveseat, Bill performs with the rollicking bluegrass outfit The High Test String Band, and often brings all of his musical worlds together under the banner of Bill Poss and the Useful Tools: A Variety Show, a rotating cast of musicians and performers from across the country. The “Useful Tools” moniker is as much a philosophy as it is a band name — Bill works with whoever fits the show, whether it’s a full band in Denver, a duo in Austin, or a string trio in Hamilton, Ontario.
A gifted storyteller, Bill is just as comfortable playing a solo folk set in a quiet listening room as he is fronting a rowdy five-piece band on a festival stage. He also has a passion for passing on the tradition — regularly teaching songwriting and performance to children and engaging audiences of all ages, from school kids to senior centers.
Bill has released five albums and a book, The Bill Poss Travelogue, chronicling his adventures on the road and behind the songs. His latest full-length album, Saltwater, was recorded in Lawrence, Kansas and released in 2014. He recently rereleased his early Austin-era recordings, originally put out under his full name Bill Passalacqua from 1999–2003, as a 2-CD retrospective collection.
From folk to bluegrass to country rock, Bill Poss is a musical shapeshifter who brings heart, humor, and humanity to every stage he stands on — whether it’s a mainstage spotlight or a cozy corner with JJ on the Loveseat.
