This is the sixth album release for Danish vocalist and songwriter, Lilly Hertzman. One of her former albums showcases her sweet vocals with only the stellar guitar accompaniment of Gilad Hekselman.
This new project was recorded in New York City with a trio. “Heartshaped” explores a collection of original songs that Hertzman has composed. Her co-producer is pianist Aaron Parks, who adds his brilliance to her original music. Each song presents a well outlined melodic quality. I can hear a saxophone sing the first couple of songs, replacing the soft second-soprano tone of her voice. Her melodies are very jazzy and interesting, perfect for a horn player to explore.
On “Revelation” Parks begins his piano introduction very classically. However, Lilly Hertzman’s melody unfolds in a very woodwind-way. I would love to hear a tenor saxophone play these lines. Some of the higher notes evade the vocalist, although she still meets the challenge. Perhaps a vocal coach could help her stabilize her ‘head register’ range. But I love the melodies she hears! The piano of Parks tickles at an arrangement that John Coltrane would have enjoyed.
Joined by Thomas Morgan on bass and Jongkuk Kim, a popular East Coast drummer, the group spent two days in studio sessions to complete twelve songs. Out of the dozen original Hertzman tunes, they picked eight for this album. Track #2 is as exploratory and well-written as the first song. This one is the title tune. Lilly has also written all the lyrics to her music. Her lyrics, like her melodies, are lovely. Thomas Morgan’s double bass line is exceptional and creative.
On a tune titled, “The Calling” the music is very reminiscent of 1960 jazz grooves. Once again, I think of John Coltrane’s music. I was surprised to read in the Hertzman press package that most of these songs were recorded with minimal rehearsal, without definite form or fixed arrangements. These musicians allowed the music to develop through attentive improvised interaction, responding closely to Lilly’s vocal lines. Their organic interaction is quite hypnotic.
Lilly Hertzman is a singular talent, singer, songwriter, lyricist, and arranger. The trio is absolutely awesome, delivering her tunes with energy, creativity and excellence. They bring this project alive! I think her songs definitely should find a horn player to perform them. They are melodically precious. As far as being a jazz singer, for me, she is a talent similar to Joni Mitchell. Lilly Hertzman has her own style and sound. On the tune “Big Heart” you hear her Pop music side.
However, her music moves me. Song’s like “Fire in the Sky” comfortably stick to my brain. She is a very capable songwriter and composer. Her melodies are jazzy and this trio brings them to life. Their album will be released April 17, 2026 to the general public.
