Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Joyann Parker
Joyann Parker is an American roots and soul singer-songwriter whose powerhouse voice and emotionally rich songwriting have made her one of the most compelling independent artists in today’s modern roots landscape. Blending blues, gospel, jazz, R&B, and vintage Americana, Parker pairs raw vocal authority with deeply human storytelling. Known for her electrifying live performances and unwavering authenticity, she has built a devoted fanbase through connection, craft, and emotional honesty rather than hype.
Her albums Out of the Dark (2021) and Roots (2023) both charted on the Billboard Blues Albums chart, with Roots debuting at No. 10. That achievement was fueled entirely by her grassroots fan community, marking a defining milestone in a career built on trust and direct support.
Parker’s next chapter arrives with Life Lines, due Friday, March 27, 2026. The album represents a bold evolution in her artistry, inspired by the stories written across our lives—in memory, in experience, and in the lines we carry as we grow older. Rooted in a warm, lived-in 1970s aesthetic, Life Lines draws influence from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Van Morrison, and Albert King. Blending soul, rock, blues, and Americana, the record feels both timeless and immediate. “It’s a reminder that getting older is a gift,” Parker says. “Every line has a story, and I’m learning to wear mine with gratitude.”
The album showcases some of Parker’s most emotionally honest songwriting to date. Standout tracks include “Think of Me,” written for her children as a reflection on young motherhood, healing, and forgiveness, and “Got Love,” an uplifting anthem inspired by a close friend’s recovery journey. Anchored by up-tempo grooves, rich harmonies, and Parker’s unmistakably soulful voice, Life Lines invites listeners to move, reflect, and feel deeply.
Born and raised in the small northern Wisconsin town of Mellen, Parker’s musical foundation was shaped early in the church. She began singing at age two while her mother played piano and started formal piano training at four, continuing through college. Initially studying pre-pharmacy, she shifted her focus to music education after a life-changing music appreciation course redirected her path. With limited access to mainstream radio, Parker absorbed music through her parents and her audiophile uncle, discovering classic pop, rock, gospel, and soul and developing a deep love for harmony and powerful vocal expression.
Those formative years—singing at weddings, leading worship, and performing in school ensembles—instilled discipline, musicality, and emotional depth that continue to define her work. Yet finding her true artistic voice came later, when Parker learned to step away from imitation and trust the natural soulfulness that had always been present. That realization reshaped her songwriting and vocal identity, freeing her from genre boundaries and allowing her to prioritize truth and storytelling above perfection. “There’s value in the flaws,” she says. “That’s where the real stuff lives.”
A magnetic live performer, Parker has spent more than a decade building her presence across the Midwest, forging deep connections with audiences drawn to her vulnerability and strength on stage. Her performances are known for their intensity, warmth, and emotional openness. One of the most powerful moments of her career came when a fan shared that Parker’s song “Out of the Dark” gave her the hope she needed to choose life during a deeply dark time. “That’s the memory I hold onto on my hardest days,” Parker reflects.
Mentored within the Minneapolis blues community, including by her longtime guitarist and business partner Mark Lamoine, Parker learned how to lead a band and navigate the music industry with integrity, confidence, and purpose. Now entering a new phase of clarity and creative momentum, her work remains rooted in authenticity, faith, and a desire to uplift others through shared experience. “I want people to feel hope, joy, compassion, and love when they think of me,” she says. “I want to love people here on earth the way Jesus loves them.”
With Life Lines on the horizon and a steadily growing fanbase behind her, Joyann Parker steps into 2026 with her most vibrant, soulful, and fearless work to date.
