There is an openness and clarity about a project that only uses bass and drums for a rhythm section. The ‘Beveled’ group uses horns, not only as frontline, featured soloists, but as harmonics that support this production. They represent the Chicago Modern Jazz scene.
On the first ‘cut,’ you hear this unusual instrumentation on a composition called “Long Road Home.” It sounds quite regal, like musicians announcing the appearance of their king. It begins with a serenade that features a tender flugelhorn solo by James Davis. This is followed by a brilliant bass clarinet taking center stage. I have a deep love for Pepper Adams and the attention he brought to the baritone sax and bass clarinet as jazz solo instruments. I was particularly moved by this bass clarinet solo by Geof Bradfield.
“The name ‘Beveled’ is meant to evoke a soundscape that uses softer edges, unexpected angles, and a generally gentler and warmer side of modern creative music,” James Davis explains.
They formed in 2013 and released their first album the following year. When drummer Juan Pastor and bass clarinetist, Michael Salter lived overseas for extended periods of time, the group was inactive. But upon their return, they released a second album in 2020, just as COVID-19 rocked our world.
Lucky for the listeners, this unusual, creative, and talented ensemble is back with a new release they call, “Arc and Edge.” Each player brings their own time-tested talent to the production table. The tunes become a menu that tantalizes and surprises us. As I taste each selection, the deliciousness of every original song is like a satisfying meal spread before me. Like a proud chef personally serving his guests, James Davis and his ‘Beveled’ group carve out new territory.
Davis has composed all the material. The voicings are richly orchestrated and elegant. “Unending Path” features an improvised solo from bassist, Daniel Thatcher. Midway through his solo, his bass re-establishes the catchy melody and Juan Pastor joins the conversation on drums. When the horns enter, they solidify the melody, offering warm harmonies, while the solo flugelhorn flickers like a warm candle on the table. Clearly, Davis writes this music playing to the strengths of his ensemble members. This is a musical meal you will delight in sampling.
