Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Dave Goddess
Dave Goddess makes music that’s raw, real, and unapologetically personal. With a voice rooted in rock, Americana, and storytelling, he writes songs not to chase trends, but to chase truth. “I don’t write for popularity,” he says. “I do it to please myself. Hopefully, others connect with that honesty.”
His new EP Kitty Hawk, out May 30th, reflects that ethos. Inspired by a spontaneous trip to the North Carolina town where the Wright Brothers first flew, the six-track release explores perseverance, love, and rebellion. Backed by a seasoned crew—Mark Buschi, Robbie Bossert, Craig Kastelnik, and Valerie Borman—Goddess delivers poetic lyrics over gritty, roots-infused arrangements.
The EP covers a wide emotional and sonic range. There’s the punchy satire of “Tin Foil Hat,” about loving someone with wild conspiracy theories, and the tender “Wild and Willing,” a reimagined ballad born under a full moon in Mexico. “Someone Worth Waiting For” paints a portrait of a small-town dreamer still searching for real love. Tracks like “Pretty Soon I’ll Be Too Late,” “Hey Romeo,” and “Lucky Guy” round out the set with moments of defiance, nostalgia, and hope.
Since forming the Dave Goddess Group in 2012, he’s built a consistent catalog of powerful releases—from Something New to the acclaimed Back in Business in 2022, which earned glowing reviews and international airplay. His live shows, often stripped-down acoustic sessions with close collaborators, focus on connection and storytelling in intimate venues.
Goddess draws inspiration from timeless icons—The Band, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Creedence, and Tom Petty—but filters it through his own lens. The result is music that resonates with soul and sincerity. “I try to get to the heart of things. I tell stories and release them into the world,” he says. “The rest is up to the listener.”
Critics have taken notice. Americana UK called his work “masterful,” while Philadelphia Enquirer praised the Dave Goddess Group as “major league all the way.” Imperfect Fifth hailed his songs as ones “that touch the deepest part of the soul.”
At the core of it all, Dave Goddess remains committed to making music that moves people—songs that uplift, challenge, and inspire. “As long as we give it everything we’ve got,” he says, “there will always be someone out there ready to listen.”
