Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Euphoria Station
Euphoria Station is a Los Angeles–based progressive rock band whose music blends Americana, rock, and touches of jazz and folk, all tied together with a love for melody and storytelling. At the heart of the band are vocalist Saskia Kraft van Ermel and guitarist Hoyt Binder, who formed the group in 2015 to create music that feels both expansive and deeply personal. Their songs are rooted in the progressive rock tradition of the late ’60s and eclectic ’70s, yet infused with a distinctly American spirit—majestic, soulful, and full of heart.
The band’s journey began with Saskia and Hoyt playing intimate acoustic sets around Hollywood, working out material that became their debut album, One Heart. To bring their vision to life, they recruited drummer Chris Quirarte, bassist Paulo Gustavo, and keyboardist Mike Farrell, crafting a sound that drew from rock, jazz, classical, and pop. Saskia’s soaring melodies and heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and resilience gave the album its emotional center.
As their sound evolved, Saskia and Hoyt turned to the acoustic textures of ’70s rock and pop, inspired by the natural beauty of the American Southwest. A trip to Sequoia, California, sparked what would become The Reverie Suite, their second full-length album. To capture this organic, nature-infused sound, they expanded the lineup with pianist/organist Ronald Van Deurzen, harmonica player Tollak Ollestad, flutist Rebecca Kleinmann, violinist Trevor Lloyd, harmony vocalist Mike Disarro, and percussionist Bobby Albright, forming what they dubbed The Americana Day Dream Revival Orchestra. The result was a sweeping, layered work that breathed with both intimacy and grandeur.
Euphoria Station’s third release, Smoking Gun, pays tribute to the heroes of Southern Rock. Featuring a cover of The Marshall Tucker Band’s “Take the Highway,” the album combines themes of Western daydreams, love lost and found, and tributes to fallen icons of the genre. New collaborators like drummer Toss Panos (Robben Ford) and bassist Jorgen Carlsson (Gov’t Mule) joined longtime contributors Van Deurzen, Ollestad, Disarro, and Kleinmann to round out the lineup. The record captures the spirit of a long train ride through the American frontier—where storytelling, grit, and melody converge.
Through every chapter of their journey, Euphoria Station has stayed true to their mission: creating music that blends complexity with heart, inviting listeners into a world of reflection, beauty, and euphoria.
