Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Laura Rain
Detroit is a city built on grit. After decades of being written off, it is rebuilding itself as a powerful center of ideas, art, and creation. The city is once again attracting artists, innovators, and dreamers who bring new energy and purpose to the Motor City. Detroit didn’t lose its soul. It was just waiting for the right moment to rise again.
This is the same city where Aretha Franklin, Parliament-Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye lived, worked, and changed music forever. Detroit has always been a place where voices don’t just sing songs, they shape culture. That tradition is still alive.
Laura Rain is a direct product of that environment. She is a powerful, hard-driving soul singer who uses both strength and control to move people. Since forming in 2012, Laura Rain and the Caesars have built a sound rooted in vintage soul, gritty blues, funky ’60s organ grooves, dance rhythms, and classic R&B. It’s old-school at heart, but it hits with modern energy.
Working closely with producer and songwriter George Friend, Laura has helped shape a sound that feels authentic and fearless. That approach has earned the band multiple Detroit Music Awards and taken them across the U.S., Canada, and Europe through years of steady touring. Laura’s voice cuts through the music with confidence, honoring the legacy of Detroit soul while pushing it forward into something fresh and alive.
In 2020, the band released a series of singles that helped grow their audience worldwide through digital platforms. Their retro soul standout “Closer to the Win” gained over 250,000 views on social media, climbed the UK Soul Chart, and drew praise for its honest feel and emotional vocal delivery. That momentum led to a deal with UK-based LRK Records, releasing “Closer to the Win” and “If I Can’t Have You” on a vinyl 45, followed by their fifth full-length album, Rise Again, in 2022.
Detroit is back. It’s strong, creative, forward-looking, and still deeply soulful. Laura Rain stands firmly in that tradition, carrying the sound of the city into the present and beyond.
