Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Erja Lyytinen
Erja Lyytinen is one of the most acclaimed blues-rock guitarists on today’s international touring circuit. Known as “the Finnish slide goddess” (The Blues Magazine), she’s spent over two decades pushing the boundaries of blues, blending traditional roots with rock, funk, and experimental sounds.
Since releasing her debut album Wildflower in 2003, Lyytinen has put out twelve studio albums and numerous live recordings, including her latest: 20 Years of Blues Rock!—a celebration of her storied career, captured live at Tavastia Club in Helsinki.
Her 2022 release, Waiting for the Daylight, earned critical praise, with the track “Bad Seed” ranked among Classic Rock Magazine’s best rock songs of the year. Guitar World readers also voted her solo in “Bad Seed” one of the top ten guitar solos of 2022. Her much-anticipated new album Smell the Roses arrives March 28, 2025, showcasing a darker, heavier sound that explores themes of loss, lust, betrayal, and resilience.
Throughout her career, Lyytinen has toured extensively across Europe, North America, and beyond, performing alongside legends like Carlos Santana and Dan Aykroyd, and sharing stages with artists from across the musical spectrum—including supporting Sir Tom Jones. Her global footprint has only grown, with honors such as a European Blues Award for “Best Guitarist,” a top-2 spot on Total Guitar’s list of “10 Best Guitarists in the World Right Now,” and a nomination at Canada’s Maple Blues Awards.
Erja is also a published author. Her biography Blues Queen (Blueskuningatar), first released in Finnish and later translated into English, offers a personal look into her journey as an artist. During the COVID-19 lockdown, she expanded her brand with a signature tea, a songbook, and innovative livestream performances, including Lockdown Live 2020.
Never one to shy away from reinvention, Erja has collaborated with icons like Sonny Landreth and Jennifer Batten, recorded with top-tier producers like Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones), and brought a unique Nordic edge to the blues-rock genre. Whether she’s performing at festivals, featured on TV shows like The Masked Singer (where she reached the 2024 finals), or honored as an “Angel of Rock” at the HRH Awards, Lyytinen continues to inspire fans worldwide with her virtuosic playing, fearless songwriting, and unstoppable drive.
With a full European and UK tour planned for 2025, Erja Lyytinen remains one of the most electrifying artists in contemporary blues-rock.
