Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Emma Wilson
Hailing proudly from the picturesque North East of England, Emma Wilson was born into a household that practically hummed with rhythm and storytelling. With a jazz-promoting mother and a father known for his larger-than-life charisma, Emma seemed destined for a life on stage. Today, she stands out as one of the UK’s most exciting voices in soul and blues.
Emma’s voice is a stunning instrument—graceful, emotional, and deeply expressive. She seamlessly glides between the aching tenderness of sweet soul and the raw power of gritty blues, drawing frequent comparisons to early Aretha Franklin and one of her personal idols, Ann Peebles. Whether on stage or in the studio, her unique tone and emotional honesty captivate listeners.
Her live performances are nothing short of electric—vibrant, heartfelt, and unforgettable. Every Emma Wilson concert is a journey through soul, blues, and passion, delivered with her whole heart.
Emma’s songwriting and vocal talent earned international recognition with her debut album Wish Her Well (2022), a ten-track collection of all-original songs that propelled her to win Emerging Blues Artist of the Year at the UK Blues Awards. The title track has become a fan favorite and streaming success, which she fondly refers to as her “little hero” song.
For her critically acclaimed follow-up Memphis Calling, Emma collaborated with some of music’s most respected names. In Nashville, she co-wrote with legendary songwriter and ASCAP Hall of Famer Gary Burr, creating the standout tracks “A Small Word” and the Americana-tinged “Watching You Leave.”
Emma also teamed up with British songwriting icon Terry Reid—known for Seed of Memory—on the haunting “I’ll See You in the Morning,” written across continents via phone calls and shared files between the UK and Los Angeles. Their creative chemistry has blossomed into a meaningful friendship.
Working with Grammy-nominated producer Scott Bomar (Al Green, Don Bryant), Emma transformed a voice memo into “Drug,” a brooding funk ballad that now features legendary drummer Steve Potts.
Beyond her vocal and songwriting prowess, Emma is also an accomplished arranger. She wrote the horn arrangement for “A Small Word,” showcasing her attention to musical detail and artistic vision. She continues to arrange and edit music for other artists, further cementing her reputation as a versatile creative force.
Emma’s deep involvement in the blues and soul community—on stage, in the studio, and behind the scenes—has earned her a devoted fanbase and the respect of DJs, promoters, and press worldwide. She’s been featured in numerous radio interviews, received global airplay, and gained widespread praise for her artistry.
In 2016, Emma was invited to perform at An Evening for Jack, a tribute concert for Jack Bruce at the iconic Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London. Sharing the stage with a stellar lineup that included Bernie Marsden, Terry Reid, Mick Taylor, Steve Hackett, and Dennis Chambers, Emma once again proved that she belongs among the greats.
