Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Boone Froggett of Otis
OTIS is a blues-based rock ’n’ roll band born out of Kentucky’s deep musical tradition. The Commonwealth is famous for producing more country stars per capita than anywhere in the U.S., but Kentucky’s musical roots run far wider than country alone—stretching from bluegrass and gospel to rock and rhythm and blues. OTIS pulls from that whole landscape, turning it into a sound that’s gritty, melodic, and built for the stage.
The band features Boone Froggett on guitar and vocals, John Seeley on bass, Alex Wells on guitar, and Dale Myers on drums. Each member grew up surrounded by traditional instruments and the kinds of songs that get passed down—piano, fiddle, guitar, and the homegrown styles that come with them. That upbringing gave them a natural feel for country-rock, bluegrass, gospel, and folk, while Kentucky’s broader musical heritage led them straight into the rock and blues artists who continue to shape their original material.
While it might be easy to label OTIS as Southern rock simply because of where they’re from, their influences reach further and dig deeper. Alongside the classic rock giants of the 1960s and ’70s, the band draws inspiration from foundational blues legends like Muddy Waters and Lead Belly, and from the soul-driven songwriting power of Motown. The result is a sound that blends blues authority with rock energy—traditional at the core, but never stuck in the past.
OTIS first drew wider attention with Tough Times: A Tribute to John Brim (2014), honoring the former Chess Records blues recording artist with respect, fire, and authenticity. In 2017, the band joined Cleopatra Records and released their second album, Eyes of the Sun, a record that further established their identity as a modern roots-rock band with serious blues credibility.
A chance meeting with ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons became a major turning point. After hearing OTIS, Gibbons became a fan and even passed their albums along to fellow legends including Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck. The band’s reach continued to expand when four songs from Eyes of the Sun were featured in the soundtrack of the 2020 film Street Survivors.
Rooted in Kentucky but built for the wider world, OTIS delivers rock ’n’ roll with blues in its bones—honest, hard-hitting, and driven by the same spirit that has made Kentucky a musical powerhouse for generations.
