Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Duke Robillard
Duke Robillard is one of America’s most respected guitarists, singers, songwriters, and bandleaders, celebrated for his mastery of blues, jump R&B, swing, and roots rock. Over the course of a long and influential career, he has earned a reputation as a true musician’s musician—an artist whose deep knowledge of American roots music is matched by exceptional skill, taste, and versatility on guitar.
Robillard’s musical journey began early. He was introduced to rock pioneers like Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly through his older brother’s record collection, and those records made a lasting impression. Inspired by the sound of players like James Burton, Duke and his father built his first guitar together, modeling it after Burton’s Fender Telecaster. That early mix of curiosity, craftsmanship, and passion helped shape the player he would become.
In 1967, Robillard co-founded Roomful of Blues with pianist Al Copley in Westerly, Rhode Island. The band quickly became a regional powerhouse, known for its high-energy jump blues style, tight arrangements, and authentic roots sound. Roomful of Blues would go on to become one of the most important jump blues bands in the country, and Robillard’s early work with the group helped establish him as a rising force in the blues world. During his time with the band, they released two albums on Rounder Records and built a loyal following through relentless touring.
After leaving Roomful of Blues in 1979, Robillard continued to expand his range and reputation. He worked with rockabilly singer Robert Gordon and the Legendary Blues Band before launching the Duke Robillard Band in 1981, a project that later evolved into Duke Robillard & the Pleasure Kings. As a bandleader, he developed a style that moved comfortably between blues, swing, jazz, and early rock and roll, all while maintaining a distinctive voice as both a player and songwriter.
His solo career grew steadily through a series of acclaimed releases that showcased both his technical command and deep respect for the traditions he draws from. Albums like Duke’s Blues (1993) and Blue Mood: The Songs of T-Bone Walker (2004) highlighted his ability to honor classic material while making it feel personal and alive. Robillard’s playing is never just about speed or flash; it is about tone, phrasing, feel, and a deep understanding of the song.
In 1989, he joined The Fabulous Thunderbirds, stepping into the role previously held by Jimmie Vaughan. It was a high-profile position that further confirmed his stature in the blues and roots music world. Even while working with major bands and collaborators, Robillard continued to build his solo catalog and collaborate widely, recording and performing with artists such as Herb Ellis and Bob Dylan.
Throughout his career, Duke Robillard has received numerous honors, including multiple W.C. Handy Awards for Best Blues Guitarist and Grammy nominations for Best Traditional Blues Album. He is widely recognized not only for his performances and recordings, but also for his work as a producer and his ability to move fluently across styles—from traditional blues and jump blues to jazz, swing, and roots rock. That range has made him one of the most respected and influential figures in American guitar music.
Robillard’s discography is both extensive and eclectic, featuring solo albums, band recordings, and collaborations that reflect his lifelong dedication to the craft. His more recent releases, including They Called It Rhythm and Blues (2022) and Roll with Me (2024), show that his passion, creativity, and command of the music remain as strong as ever.
Duke Robillard’s legacy is built on more than longevity. It is built on mastery, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to the rich traditions of American roots music. Whether leading a band, backing another artist, or recording under his own name, he continues to set a standard for excellence that few can match.
