Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Christina Crofts
Christina Crofts is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and slide guitarist—and a true veteran of Australia’s blues and rock scene. Known for her uncompromising bottleneck tone and a “big sound” that far exceeds her small frame, Crofts has spent years building a reputation as one of the country’s most commanding live performers and distinctive slide players.
Born in the coastal town of Coffs Harbour, Christina grew up in a multicultural household with a Norwegian immigrant father and an Australian mother. Her family later moved to Brisbane, where her passion for guitar took hold in her early teens and quickly became central to who she was. As her playing developed, she headed to Sydney, where she met guitarist Steve Crofts. What began as guitar lessons eventually became a lifelong musical partnership, and the two later married.
Over the years, Christina honed her craft in a range of bands, gradually shaping the signature sound she’s known for today—raw, fearless, and rooted in blues tradition while still carrying the punch of rock. She performed earlier under the name Croftstown Traffic and later stepped forward under her own banner as the Christina Crofts Band, where her voice, songwriting, and slide guitar style have become the heart of the show.
Christina continues to draw packed houses in and around Sydney and has performed at major festivals including Thredbo Blues Festival, Narooma Blues Festival, Mitchell Creek Rock ’n Blues Festival, Wingham Music Festival, Bimbadgen Festival, the Australian Blues Festival, and the Great Southern Blues & Roots Festival. Her music has also reached audiences well beyond Australia, with performances across Scandinavia and numerous venues internationally.
In 2022, Christina and her band won the Sydney Blues Society Blues Challenge, earning the opportunity to represent Australia at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, USA—an important milestone that placed her on a global stage alongside top blues artists from around the world.
In August 2025, Christina released her fifth album, Best of Bottleneck, a hard-hitting collection of standout slide guitar tracks and crowd favorites drawn from across her catalog. The release earned strong reviews internationally and hit #1 on the Australian Blues Roots & Radio Airplay Charts in September, pushing her firmly back into the spotlight and reminding listeners exactly why her playing stands out: it’s powerful, direct, and full of attitude.
Christina Crofts is the kind of artist who doesn’t just play songs—she drives them. With a career built on musicianship, relentless live performance, and a fierce slide guitar voice, she remains one of the most exciting blues-rock performers in Australia today.
