Brody Buster was just seven years old when he first picked up one of his mother’s harmonicas in Paola, Kansas; when he taught himself to play. He quickly found himself playing alongside legends like B.B. King, Quincy Jones, Keb’ Mo’, and others. At the age of twelve Buster, managed by his parents, was headlining blues clubs throughout the US, playing harmonica and singing lead, and fronting a tight LA quartet called The Bluesbusters. Buster was featured on numerous high profile TV shows including The Tonight Show. Though not yet a teenager, Buster was already a bonafide star. Buster has over thirty-seven years of both performing and recording and has played many stages including the Montreal Jazz Fest, the King Biscuit Blues Festival, the Bradenton Blues Fest and the Big Blues Bender. In 2017, Brody Buster’s One-Man Band became a reality as he competed in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, and finished in second place, resulting in the well-received One Man Band album “Damn! I Spilled The Beans”. After a series of poor decisions Buster found himself deep into the hole of substance abuse and addiction. After five years, he moved from Kansas to Missouri and started his road to “Redemption”. He cleaned himself up and put all into what matters most: family and music. Buster began to write again, “Redemption” was born with these nine rockin’ blues-y originals.
“Redemption” was produced by Duane Trower and recorded at the Weights and Measures Soundlab in Kansas City. The ensemble includes Brody Buster, vocals, harmonica and lead guitar; Howard Mahan, slide guitar; Jackie Myers, organ and piano; Terry Dry, bass; Jacque Garoutte, bass, guitar, and backing vocals; Ian Pond, drums; and Danielle Nicole, backing vocal.
On “Can You Hear Me”, with some great Hammond B-3 from Myers, Buster pleads “I’ve been walking down this road, most of my life…now I’m kind of desperate, I’ve burned all my bridges …I need some new friends…can you hear me” as he plays some sweet harmonica. “Born To Be Bad”, “when your born to be bad, it’s so hard to know when to be good…when things get bad now I contact my best friend, you know the blues won’t even let me in”. “Deadwood Shuffle”, “I only got three dollars…I hope good luck comes my way…as long as I pay…I hope good luck comes some day…all I need is good luck, I hope it comes my way”.
“Working For The Devil”, “I’m working for the devil, I don’t wanna’ work no more…my baby’s got me now…I don’t wanna’ work no more”. “Wish These Blues Would Stop”, is a sort of Samba, with some nice beats from Dry and Garoutte, “It looks like a wild ride back to the top…I’ve been walkin’ all day, people let me tell you, I wish these blues would stop”. On “Protection From Your Affection” Buster cries “I need protection from your affection…it seems everywhere we go your like a maniac”, with Myers on organ, some great guitar and more scintillating harmonica.
“The Color Blue” is a slow burning blues with some fine piano, “I feel just like the color blue…I feel so lost, I feel the bad side of town, I feel the sun hit my face, I feel just like the color blue”. “This Time I Got The Blues” was written by Eugene Smiley Sr. in the early 1990’s, and recorded with an eight-year-old Buster on harmonica. “The Wants” was written by Billy “Beale” Woods as Buster croons “I want a little house, a car, a girl, I got the wants…what I want and what I get, I still want love”.
The clip art on the cover of “Redemption” helps to tell the story of how Brody Buster came out of addiction. The high energy music tells of Buster’s newfound lease on life. It will only take one listening but I’m sure you’ll play it over and over. Brody Buster is back.
