Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Andy Hanson
Born from the ashes of various musical projects that reached their natural conclusion, Andy Hanson embarked on a solo journey. This journey begins in his home base of Eau Claire, WI, and unfolds through carefully crafted folk and Americana songs. At the heart of his music lies a deep yearning to explore the essence of life and living.
His debut album, Roots, is a poignant exploration of authentic songwriting, inviting listeners to confront the complexities and truths of their own experiences, even when those truths are confusing or painful. The album seeks to dismantle the interpretations of past experiences shaped by his upbringing in the church and the challenges of childhood.
To establish a recognizable foundation, Andy wanted Roots to reflect the imagery of tree roots—whatever is poured onto them, whether poison or water, influences how the tree grows, thrives, or withers. He views this as a simple yet powerful metaphor that resonates with the human experience. Roots illustrates how both heavy and light experiences shape our lives.
In his creative process, Andy thoughtfully revisited old, often painful memories, seeking a deeper understanding of his identity and personal growth. His ultimate goal is to spark conversations around difficult subjects, empowering others to share their own struggles.
For artistic inspiration, Andy draws from a diverse range of influences, blending the timeless artistry of folk legends from the 1960s with the fresh perspectives of contemporary songwriters. His sound evokes the spirit of Bob Dylan, intertwined with the emotive storytelling of artists like Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, Amigo the Devil, and Jeffrey Martin.
