Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Julia Eubanks of Agnes Uncaged
Agnes Uncaged, formerly known as Creeping Charlie, has quickly become one of the most compelling voices in Midwest indie rock. The Minneapolis-based band has earned attention for their guitar-driven, cinematic sound that balances raw emotion with melodic beauty. Critic Chris Riemenschneider called Julia Eubanks “one of the Twin Cities’ most promising young songwriters,” and the group was chosen to lead First Avenue’s Best New Bands showcase in 2022, a milestone that confirmed their growing influence in the region.
The name Agnes Uncaged came to Julia Eubanks during a hike in the French Alps, when she imagined a rabbit apparition named Agnes appearing over the mountain landscape. In that moment, Julia felt her long-held fear of releasing music finally loosen its grip. That sense of magic and transformation runs through the band’s lyrics, which move easily between the surreal and the everyday. Their songs feel like memories half remembered — part dream, part confession.
At the heart of the band are sisters Julia Eubanks on vocals and guitar and Esmé Eubanks on bass, joined by Jack Malone on drums and Cole Benson on guitar. Together they create a sound that is both gritty and graceful, drawing inspiration from ’90s Pacific Northwest grunge while keeping one foot firmly in the present. Their music carries the weight of nostalgia and youth at the same time, loud enough to shake a room but intimate enough to feel personal.
Beyond the stage, Julia and Esmé have become deeply involved in supporting their Minneapolis neighbors during the current turmoil caused by ICE activity in the city. The sisters are working tirelessly to purchase and deliver groceries and to help transport people to and from their jobs so they do not have to rely on public transportation during an uncertain and frightening time. They have dedicated their upcoming CD release show at the end of the month to those affected and have vowed to donate all proceeds to organizations protecting immigrant families in Minneapolis.

Agnes Uncaged believes music should serve the community that nurtures it. Their new release is not just an artistic statement but an act of solidarity, proof that a band can be loud on stage and compassionate off it. Anyone who wants to support these efforts can contact the band directly through their website at www.agnesuncaged.com to donate or learn more.
Agnes Uncaged is more than a promising indie rock band. They are storytellers, neighbors, and artists who understand that songs can carry both beauty and responsibility.
