Affinity Trio NEW OUTLOOK
AFFINITY TRIO
NEW OUTLOOK
Origin Records
Eric Jacobson, trumpet; Pamela York, piano; Clay Schaub, bass.
The Affinity Trio has spent four years in weekly residency at Milwaukee’s historic Mason Street Grill. The trio is made up of three dynamic Midwest jazz players including Eric Jacobson on trumpet, Pamela York on piano, and Clay Schaub on bass. They fit together deliciously, smooth as fresh baked bread and butter. One thing that impressed me right away, I didn’t even miss a drummer. They set the time and tempo without any percussion at all. The mastery of Clay Schaub on the bass locks in with York’s piano brilliance and they make that rhythm happen effortlessly. Eric Jacobson rides along with his duo rhythm section, singing the melody and improvising freely on trumpet. They have a sound that’s tight, secure and as comfortable as your favorite armchair.
This trio presents six classic jazz standards and three originals. Opening with an original composition by trumpeter Eric Jacobson, called “Onward.” That tune sets the tone for this swinging jazz album.
It is followed by their slow swing of the popular “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” The trio’s album title tune unfolds, led by composer Pamela York. It’s a waltz tune and quite melodic. I love the way Schaub’s bass uses his instrument, and sometimes a single note, to tap out the time. Eric Jacobson’s horn is both melodic and velvet smooth. After his awesome solo, Schaub takes time to solo on his double bass.
They pick up the tempo and offer a Straight-ahead arrangement on a Sam Jones tune called “Bittersweet.” It allows Clay Schaub to showcase his brilliance on the double bass. Pamela York becomes the piano rhythm section that supports his bass solo. When Eric Jacobson enters on trumpet, he takes me back to those swinging Charlie Parker bebop-days. When they trade fours, (usually featuring a drummer) I am totally impressed.
Every song on this album is performed in a stellar way. Only seasoned musicians and an aggregation that is totally comfortable with each other could sound so seamless. This album quickly becomes one of my favorite releases of 2025.
