Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Todd Mack
For more than 40 years, singer-songwriter, producer, and community-builder Todd Mack has followed the road less traveled, creating a life in music that has taken him across continents, cultures, and unexpected stages. His songs have carried him far beyond the usual club and theater circuit, with performances at the famed Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents’ Club, a bomb shelter in Israel, a remote island in Fiji, an olive grove in the West Bank, and the Taichung Jazz Festival in Taiwan. Wherever he has traveled, Mack has used music as a bridge: a way to connect, listen, tell stories, and find common ground.
Mack’s relationship with music began early. Classically trained from the age of eight, he first developed a foundation in discipline, melody, and musical structure. A few years later, his life changed when he picked up his first guitar. The instrument opened a different door, one rooted in songwriting, self-expression, and the emotional directness of folk, rock, and acoustic music. He began writing songs almost immediately, discovering a voice that would shape the next several decades of his creative life.
His professional recording career began in 1989 with the release of his self-titled debut album. That first record launched a period of full-time touring and steady creative output, as Mack spent the next decade performing, writing, and developing his craft on the road. Over the years, he continued releasing music, building a catalog that reflected both his personal journey and his global perspective.
To date, Todd Mack has released eight albums, each one adding another chapter to a career defined by persistence, curiosity, and a deep belief in the power of song. His work has always carried a strong human center, shaped by the places he has been, the people he has met, and the stories that stay with him long after the performance ends.
In addition to his work as a recording artist, Mack has spent decades helping other musicians bring their own visions to life. Since the late 1980s, he has produced dozens of albums by independent artists, working with a wide range of musicians and styles. As a record producer, his strength lies in drawing out the best in the artist rather than imposing his own stamp on the music. He believes the most powerful records are the ones that reflect the artist’s true sound, spirit, and identity. His role in the studio is not to overwrite the artist’s voice, but to help reveal it with clarity, confidence, and authenticity.
That same philosophy carries into his work as a live event producer. Over the years, Mack has produced a wide variety of live events across the United States and internationally, combining strong organizational and leadership skills with a gift for creative, outside-the-box thinking. His events are known for being thoughtfully curated, immersive, and community-centered, bringing people together through music, story, and shared experience. Whether working behind the board, on the stage, or behind the scenes, Mack approaches each project with the same goal: to create meaningful connection.
In 2025, Mack returned with two powerful new releases. The single “Floyd,” released on the five-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, stands as a deeply felt response to injustice, memory, and the ongoing need for reflection and change. That same year, he also released I’m Gonna Love You No Matter What, his first full-length album in 14 years. The album marks both a creative return and a continuation of the path he has been walking for decades: honest songs, lived experience, and music made with purpose.
Todd Mack’s career is the story of an artist who never stopped listening, traveling, learning, producing, organizing, and writing. From classical training to folk-rooted songwriting, from international performances to artist-centered record production, from intimate songs to large-scale community events, his work reflects a lifetime spent using music as a force for connection. After more than four decades, Mack continues to create with the same restless spirit that first put a guitar in his hands and sent him out into the world.
