Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Andra Suchy
Andra Suchy is a North Dakota native with a voice that stops people in their tracks. Classically trained and a veteran of musical theater, she grew up in a talented, music-filled family and developed the kind of vocal control and emotional range that only comes from years of disciplined performance. Over time, that foundation has made her one of the most in-demand singers in the Midwest and beyond—an artist equally at home on a grand stage, in a studio, or harmonizing beside legendary names.
Throughout her career, Andra has performed with an impressive range of respected artists, including Brad Paisley, Mindy Smith, Emmylou Harris, Chris Thile, John Prine, and renowned soprano Renée Fleming. She has also contributed to recordings across indie, rock, blues, and folk worlds, collaborating with artists such as The Honeydogs, Jonny Lang, Peter Ostroushko, and Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner. That versatility is a big part of her reputation: she can blend with anyone, elevate any song, and still sound unmistakably like herself.
Andra has appeared on some of the most iconic stages around, including the Ryman Auditorium, First Avenue, and the Bohemian Hall, and she was also a regular performer on the nationally beloved radio program A Prairie Home Companion. While many listeners first discovered her through her powerhouse vocals, Andra has quietly built another side of her artistry over the years—songwriting. In 2006, she self-released her solo album Patchwork Story, and later signed with Grammy-winning Red House Records to release Little Heart on March 27, 2012. That album—packed with infectious originals—blends country, rock, folk, and blues with a subtle twang, earning strong support from Americana and AAA radio and helping establish her as a distinctive voice in roots music.
In 2012, Andra toured in support of Little Heart and showcased at key industry events, including South By Southwest (SXSW) and the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, bringing her songs and her signature voice to wider audiences.
Offstage, Andra’s life is grounded in the things she loves most. Known affectionately as “Auntie Andra” by her nieces and nephews, she’s proudly devoted to family. She shares her home with three cats and a supportive partner who has encouraged her through her career resurgence. When she isn’t writing, recording, or performing, she finds joy in gardening and staying active—small daily rituals that keep her balanced while her music continues to reach further.
