Making a Scene Presents an Interview with GB Leighton
GB Leighton is the kind of artist the music industry talks about but rarely knows how to manufacture: a relentless road warrior, a natural frontman, and a songwriter who can make a room full of strangers feel like a community by the second chorus.
He plays more than 200 shows a year, has sold over 100,000 albums, and has built a fanbase so loyal they’ll follow him from Minnesota to Mexico. He’s done it all without the support of a major record label—pure momentum earned the hard way: one show, one handshake, one singalong at a time. Add in a brand-new release, “Believe,” and even a state-of-the-art nightclub named after one of his songs, and it’s clear this isn’t a “local act.” This is a movement built around a performer who knows how to deliver.
GB Leighton is a band named after its driving force: Brian Leighton, one of the region’s most electrifying live performers and most consistently solid writers. Over nearly three decades and fourteen albums, Leighton and his band have torn through rock clubs, festivals, and even the occasional fan’s living room—anywhere people are ready to feel something and sing it back. His shows aren’t background music. They’re events. Couples sing along on the dance floor, crowds roar the hooks, and Leighton works a room the way the best frontmen do—like he’s talking to each person individually.
Calling him “a man of the people” might sound like a cliché, but it fits when you see him in action. There’s a direct line from the classic heartland greats to what Leighton does night after night. Think Springsteen lighting up Asbury Park before the wider world caught on. Think Mellencamp grinding it out in those anonymous Indiana bars. Leighton carries that same inescapable rock ’n’ roll spirit—the kind that doesn’t feel rehearsed, it feels lived.
Leighton is the first to admit how much Bruce Springsteen influenced him. “If I hadn’t heard a bunch of Bruce’s bootlegs or seen the videos I’d be a much different musician,” he says. “He’s always been a great songwriter and performer, like a preacher almost who commands an audience. That’s the place I’m coming from. But at the end of the day, I’m just a common guy—a working-class kid from a Twin Cities suburb who loves to put on a good show and hopefully write some good songs in between.”
That working-class realism is part of why the music connects. It’s also why the fanbase is so intense. In the Midwest especially, Leighton’s songs have left a mark—sometimes literally, with fans tattooing his lyrics onto their skin. His national country breakthrough came with “Get Up,” his eleventh album, and he was even recognized by Billboard.com as a Top 10 Country Artist to Watch, a nod to how far his independent momentum has reached.
For Brian Leighton, the mission has never changed. “This is the only thing I ever wanted to do,” he says. “I don’t see stopping or changing it up no matter where it takes me and the band.” And if the numbers, the miles, and the crowds are any indication, GB Leighton is still climbing—powered by the one thing you can’t fake in this business: a real connection with real fans.
