Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Zac Harmon

Zac Harmon is an award-winning guitarist, singer, and songwriter from Jackson, Mississippi, whose sound carries the deep lineage of the blues while pushing it forward with soul, funk, gospel, reggae, and modern blues-rock energy. Critics have praised his “masterful” musicianship and his mix of Bobby “Blue” Bland sophistication with Freddie King–style bite, placing him in the company of blues greats.

Raised in the shadow of Jackson’s historic Farish Street district, Harmon grew up surrounded by music and culture. He began playing professionally at sixteen, quickly sharing stages with touring blues and soul artists before moving to Los Angeles in his early twenties to pursue the music business full time. There, he built a successful career as a studio musician, songwriter, and producer, writing for major R&B artists and even working as a staff writer for Michael Jackson’s publishing company.

In the early 2000s, Harmon returned to his roots and launched his blues recording career, releasing Live at Babe & Ricky’s Inn (2003) and winning the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in 2004 with the Mid South Blues Revue. His breakthrough album The Blues According to Zacariah earned major airplay and won the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut, establishing him as a major modern blues voice.

Since then, Zac Harmon has continued touring worldwide and releasing acclaimed albums, including Right Man Right Now and his Catfood Records releases produced with legendary producer Jim Gaines. His live show is known as a high-energy, nonstop “throwdown” that consistently gets audiences on their feet.
