Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Flutes and Low
Flutes & Low is the folk duo of Ben Pichler and Cambria Haen, two musicians who first met and began playing together in Duluth, Minnesota. From the start, their chemistry leaned toward atmosphere—songs built on close harmony, patient storytelling, and melodies that stay with you long after they end. Deeply shaped by the Midwest’s wide-open landscapes, cold seasons, and shoreline quiet, their music feels both intimate and expansive: pastoral, emotional, and grounded in place.
Their sound draws inspiration from artists like Bon Iver, Damien Rice, Penny and Sparrow, Bonny Light Horseman, and Iron & Wine, but Flutes & Low make those influences their own through restraint and clarity. Rather than layering every moment, they trust the power of a simple arrangement, traditional folk structures, and the emotional weight that can come from two voices and a few instruments. The result is music that doesn’t rush—songs that breathe, hover, and hit you gently in the chest.
The duo’s name comes from Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem “Inversnaid,” whose moody natural imagery echoes the frigid, weather-shaped world that has influenced their upbringing and their writing. Like the poem, their songs carry a sense of wilderness and wonder—quiet on the surface, but alive with movement underneath.
In 2025, Flutes & Low introduced themselves with their self-produced debut album Lay Fallow, an 11-song collection released on March 20, 2025. The record established what the duo does best: harmony-driven songwriting, lyrical warmth, and arrangements that turn small sounds into something cinematic.
