Making a Scene Presents an Interview with the Avery Set

The Avery Set began in the early 2000s in Frankenmuth, Michigan, growing out of a close friendship between Chris (lead singer) and Jake (drummer). What started as two friends making noise quickly turned into a real band with a shared sense of purpose—writing songs, chasing shows, and building a sound that felt honest and lived-in.

In 2006, the band released their debut record, Wishful Thinking, capturing the early energy of a group finding its voice. A year later, in 2007, The Avery Set relocated to Nashville, a move that pushed the band into new rooms, new influences, and a wider circle of musicians. With an expanded lineup, they released Returning to Steam in 2009, a record that marked a clear step forward in confidence and craft.

As their writing evolved, the band also leaned into a more stripped-down, acoustic-driven side with From A Guest House, showing a different kind of intimacy and detail in both the arrangements and the storytelling. Over the years, The Avery Set continued to release a handful of singles, often working long-distance and collaborating across time zones—proof that the band’s identity wasn’t tied to one location, but to the connection between the people making the music.

Active in various forms since 2004, The Avery Set is now returning in a way that feels both new and familiar. For the first time since 2012, the band has reunited its classic lineup and recorded new songs live in an Arkansas cabin. The setting wasn’t an accident. It matched the spirit of the reunion—unpolished in the best way, focused on performance, chemistry, and capturing something real in the room.

This new chapter is shaped by time, distance, and the kind of musical bond that doesn’t disappear just because life changes. The Avery Set’s return isn’t about nostalgia.
