Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Dan Leary of Institutional Green
Institutional Green is a St. Paul, Minnesota rock trio that turns sharp writing, lived-in musicianship, and Twin Cities grit into what the band itself calls a kind of “heartland indie rock hot dish.” The group features Dan Leary on vocals and bass, Kevin Henretta on guitar, and Billy Dankert on drums and vocals. Their debut full-length, Deep Pockets, arrived in April 2025 and introduced a band rooted in post-pandemic reflection, local history, and the stubborn spirit of the Minnesota music community. Public profiles and coverage describe the trio as part of the St. Paul scene, with songs that balance catchy hooks, social observation, and a strong sense of place.
Institutional Green’s connection to the Minnesota Music Resistance grows naturally out of that same community. Minnesota Music Resistance was formed after the 2024 election by Front Row Paul Engebretson and others connected to the local music scene, with the goal of using music to build community and support human rights, inclusion, and resistance to authoritarianism. Institutional Green has publicly boosted Minnesota Music Resistance through its own social media, sharing the group’s message and merch rollout, which places the band among the visible supporters helping spread the word.
That link is even more personal because Institutional Green’s song “On These Two Pauls” honors Front Row Paul Engebretson and photographer Paul Lundgren, two beloved figures in Minnesota music culture. In that way, the band’s participation in the Minnesota Music Resistance is not just political or promotional. It is also communal. Institutional Green represents the part of the St. Paul scene that believes local music can do more than entertain. It can remember its people, rally its community, and give resistance a human sound.
