Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Daxton!
Daxton Monaghan is an Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose music lives at the crossroads of grungy blues, psychedelic rock, and funk-driven soul. His sound is raw and adventurous, built on thick guitar tones, expressive vocals, and a fearless approach to songwriting that refuses to sit inside one genre.
Monaghan first came to attention in the early 1990s as the frontman for the punk band Latex Rubber Skinhead, a group that became known for its high-energy performances and underground following. After that project, he continued moving through a wide range of bands and collaborations, constantly reshaping his musical identity. Along the way he has performed with respected artists such as Bill Chambers of The Lost Dogs and Andy Kent of You Am I, experiences that helped refine both his songwriting and his stagecraft. In 2009 he received an honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition, confirming his growing reputation as a serious writer as well as a performer.
His latest album captures the full scope of that journey. It is a bold fusion of blues grit, funky falsettos, and psychedelic textures that feels both vintage and modern at the same time. The record opens with “Dimension,” a hypnotic mix of blues, rock, and funk that sets the tone with an atmospheric, mysterious groove. “Fully Animated” follows with a burst of energy that nods to the spirit of Prince and Jimi Hendrix while still sounding unmistakably like Monaghan.
Tracks like “Euphoria” and “Groovalicious” push the album further into upbeat, riff-driven territory, blending catchy hooks with a rough-edged blues attitude. “Trigger” stands out as one of the record’s strongest moments, built on powerful guitar stabs and verses that grab hold and don’t let go. Then the mood shifts with “Cruising in the Summertime,” a laid-back, sun-soaked tune that feels made for slow Sundays and long roads.
Monaghan dives deep into darker blues territory on “Serpent of the Road,” where dirty slide guitar meets haunting vocals and imagery of endless highways. “Kicking Horse” continues that trip with a desert-flavored, psychedelic slide groove that drifts into stoner-blues territory. “Light Up” brings the energy back with raw, meaty riffs and a soaring falsetto chorus, while the closing track “Electric Flower Child” ties everything together with echoes of Hendrix, touches of Prince, and even a hint of Bowie.
Across the album, Daxton Monaghan proves himself as an artist who respects the past without being trapped by it. His music is adventurous, emotional, and a little dangerous, built for listeners who like their blues dirty, their funk loose, and their rock full of attitude.
