Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Larin Michaels
Born and raised in the heart of Motown, Larin Michaels grew up surrounded by one of the world’s greatest music traditions. He began his musical journey at just seven years old as a drummer, laying the foundation for a lifelong career shaped by rhythm, soul, and unmistakable Detroit grit. By fifteen, Larin had expanded his musical palette to include guitar and piano, and soon formed his first rock band, The Noblemen, with longtime friend Mario Bee. The group quickly built a regional following, performing across the Midwest and appearing on radio and television while recording original material.
In the late 1970s, Larin broadened his horizons even further by accepting a role as musical director and performer with the European touring production Hair and Now. The experience refined his skills onstage and behind the scenes, preparing him for the next chapters of a diverse and ever-evolving career.
After returning to the United States, Larin continued working nonstop as a performer, writer, producer, and session musician. Over the decades, he has appeared with or recorded alongside an extraordinary list of legendary artists—a résumé that reflects both his versatility and deep roots in American music.
His credits include backing guitar for Del Shannon and Freddy Cannon, session and touring work with Willie Tyler & Lester, and key roles within major Motown-affiliated acts. Larin became a member, keyboardist, writer, and arranger for the iconic band Frijid Pink, and also performed with The Reflections and gospel group The Evereadys, serving as arranger on their Billboard Top 100 hit “Nothing Separates Me From Your Love,” which reached No. 14.
Larin has also collaborated with Michael Gibbons of Band Finger and has shared the stage with an astounding lineup of music royalty, including Bob Seger, The Four Tops, The Spinners, The Temptations, The O’Jays, Mitch Ryder, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Elke Sommer, Chairmen of the Board, Flo & Eddie, Aretha Franklin, Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth, Shades of Blue, Diana Ross & The Supremes, and Kid Rock, among many others.
Now entering a new creative era, Larin signed with Conch Town Records in 2025 and has already released two singles through the label. His upcoming full-length album—set for release in late 2025—marks the next major milestone in a career defined by reinvention, craftsmanship, and an unwavering love for music.
From Motown beginnings to stages around the world, Larin Michaels continues to evolve, create, and inspire—proving that great music is timeless and great artists never stop growing.
